I have been contacted by a company that is interested in buying one or two of my travel photos for use in a European cruise line brochure; it would be about a 5” x 10” area of the brochure (Cover front or inside front) and a printing of about 10,000 copies. They are asking for a price, but I do not know what a reasonable price is, and was hoping to get some guidance.

The reason I have to ask is that I have only been taking photos with a DSLR for about 2.5 years now, and have been doing it mostly for my satisfaction and to share with friends and family. Though the thought has crossed my mind that if I could learn to be a good photographer I might be able to sell some and offset some of the expenses of equipment and travel. So, the bottom line is I don’t have much of a clue what photos for this type of use might sell for. I had thought about $500, and thought that might be too cheap, then again maybe it’s not. I realize that photos sell for various prices according what people can agree on, but if I could come up with a range of realistic prices it would help, and be appreciated.

Intesting,

Im not sure how much I would sell the photos for, what are they using them for I.e Handouts ect.

I think around $500-$1000 each seing though they are printing 10,000

But that's $0.10 a copy so mabey more.

Hope you work it out :)

Thanks Joshua, I appreciate the input. I don't know exactly how they intend to distibute them, all I know is they will be promotional materials for a cruise line.

Here is John Harrington's price estimate page http://johnharrington.com …ck/advertising-brochures/ (external link) I would go about 20% lower than his prices. I picked 20% lower sense he is established with a very good reputation and the economy is not quite supporting normal prices right now so sometimes you gotta give a little to gain the business.

Fotoquote shows in the range of $400-$700. Thats fairly close to what John shows in the link provided. Getty lists around $900 for similar use, rights managed, 1 year, US only.

What the client is willing to spend it a whole different matter, and will ultimately set the value. If they have some other images that they can get royalty free for $30 each, and they feel would work just as well for their purposes and don't mind taking the risk that the same image might show up in their competitors brochure, you won't get the going rate.

You know the high end ($500-$900 rights managed), and you know the low end ($5 downloads), so it will be somewhere in-between! :(
