I took a few shots today in RAW and I'm not sure that I'm happy with how the WB is turning out. I had it set to 'daylight' as it was daytime and the sun was out. I tried changing the WB to 'auto' and got quite a different result. I'm not sure which I like better or which seems to be more accurate. I ought to know-I was there when I took the picture! Any opinions on this? The first one is 'auto' and the second is 'daylight'. I'm thinking there is too much blue in the 'auto' WB shot.

Thanks in advance!

Jason

As long as I'm on a roll here going through pictures, here is another example of my WB confusion. I don't remember which flower most accurately reflects the image as there were yellow and orange flowers all over. I can't remember if this particular one was orange or yellow. Grrr... The first is auto WB and the second was set to daylight. I think I like the 'auto' shot better. Hmm.

As I'm sure you probably know since you shoot in RAW you can adjust your WB in Camera Raw

1DX, ID MKIII, 24-70 2.8L, 70-200 2.8L, 16-35 2.8L, 100 macro, 600EX-RTs, ST-E3-RT, Einsteins, Kacey Beauty Dish with a cracked grid, yada yada

Yeah, use the WB adjust tool and then tweak it until you like how it looks. White balance is completely subjective. That is unless it is obvious something should be white and it is not.

what about doing a custom white balance, it only takes a second.

Shoot in Raw and use the eye dropper tool to set the white balance. the first 2 pics you posted should be easy to get right on.

I often see people talking about doing a custom white balance, and always wonder what the point is, if you can alter it anyway in Camera RAW!?! Is there really any advantage?

Advantage is that you can apply the custom WB to many pics at once instead of tweaking each pic one by one. If you took many pics in the same lighting conditions, it's a faster workflow

I think there is a slight misunderstanding. When I said the WB Adjust tool, I meant the eyedropper, and I think that many people refer to the eyedropper as the "custom WB" tool.

Regardless, WB is subjective.
