Took G6 to the park today

It was a bright and sunny day, and got some good shots, but
When I set the camera to AV and selected F 2.0 as soon as I pressed the shutter halfway, F number changed to like F 4.0 or F5.3. It wouldn't stay at F2.0?
What is up with that?

My guess is that is was actually to bright outside. The camera couldn't choose a shutter time short enough for the F2.0 and therefore changes it to something like F4.0.

I just came back from a trip to Egypt where I had this problem. We spent 5 hours at the Karnak temple in Luxor. Taking pictures under the bright Egyptian sun with big apertures like F2.0 was impossible. It would end up overexposed. I solved the problem using the ND-filter that you can turn on in some menu. This will reduce the amount of incoming light.

You might also check if the Safety Shift is turned on. (Menu in the Record Mode.)

The safety shift was off, that was my first thought also. I guess 1/2000 of a second is not fast enough for F 2.0.

If it is very bright, and 1/2000 is not fast enough, I think it will show "1/2000" in red on the display.

The only way the Aperture will change in AV mode to above F3.0 is if safety shift is on. Otherwise as Faelle mentions, 1/2000 will come up in red.

The other thing to watch out for is that if you are at the telephoto end of your lens, then the aperture will be restricted to F3.0, hence if you set aperture to F2.0 and then zoom all the way, your lens will revert back to F3.0 or or somewhere between F2 and F3 (if you have mildly zoomed in). I suspect this is what has happened based on the shot you posted. This occurs in all camera modes as well as Macro and Super Macro zoom modes also

I figured it out, the flash was on! If I turn it off in AV mode the aperature will stay where I put it, if it is on the camera changes the aperature. I just was outside in full sun and tried it. This was bugging me cause I knew the safety shift was off.

yes because the camera with flash on reverts to a shutter speed of 1/60 of a sec.. in this case this is much slower a shutter speed than your normal 1/1000 of so for sunny conditions so the aperture changes to a smaller size F4 upwards to maintain the same exposure level by letting less light in.
