Ok I bought a Canon 100-400mm IS and with it I ordered a HOYA POLARIZER FILTER. Basically I just wanted something on the end to protect the lens; was this the right one to buy? It's just now I look and thing about it it does seem quite dark so will it reduce the light I get into the lens? Should I have bout a clear polarizer/ UV filter? or will this be fine really and am I just being silly?

Thanks for any help

Richard

In my experience, you can use your polarizer with the 100-400 on only the brightest, sunniest days. I've used mine with great success at air shows or to take the glare off of water, but when trying to get shots of wildlife on dull, overcast days, it has to come off.

1Dx - 5DIII - 40D - Canon 24-70LII, 100L macro, 135L, 16-35L, 70-200 f4 and 100-400L lenses

- "Very good" is the enemy of "great." Sometimes we confuse the two.

Disregarding the pros/cons of a protective filter...
I think a UV filter is commonly used as a protective device on your lens. The circular polarizer will cut out some of the light - not what you want for 'protection'

Nope!

I just have a "Hoya 77mm SUPER-HMC - UV FILTER - HOUVSMC77" (how B&H describes it) and I've noticed no image issues.

Ouch! The high end hoya CP is $150! My UV filter was only $50....Hopefully you can return/exchange the polarizer.
