While on vacation I somehow managed to scratch (some deep) my lcd on my xsi and was wondering if either of these products is any good:

Displex LCD Scratch Remover ($10)
NOVUS Plastic Cleaners and Scratch Removers ($25)

I would hate to spend money to send my camera to have the lcd screen replaced.

You should be able to get a replacement for the original cover for the LCD display (the LCD display is NOT what you can touch - it's a heavy plastic cover) from Canon for around $20. They are held in place with double-sided tape which comes with the replacement part. You remove the old one with a suction cup.

After you have the old one out, you can work on refinishing it to keep as a spare.

I really wonder how you damaged the surface of the LCD cover. I don't baby my 20D, and it has not one single mark on it.

call your local motorcyle dealer. They ussually cary a respectable product to remove scrratches from visors and windscreens.

Then get your self on of those clear protective sheets to cover your lcd.

I bought a glass lcd screen protector... I am just waiting to have the scratches resolved before I put it on...

...don't know about the XSi, but many LCD covers have filters in them, dunno how deep the top anti-scratch layer is.

I was a little dismayed when I found a scratch on my cover as well when I pulled the 40D out of the bag at noon today. I thought it was an eyelash at first. I have no idea how it could have happened. I thought the screen was tougher than that though. Had no such happenings on my XTI. I'm trying hard not to let it bug me.

I've used the Zagg shieldzone protectors on all my electronical goodies. http://www.zagg.com/index.php (external link)

Having done work with this in the past, I'd suggest Meguiar's plastic polish. It comes in several 'grits' and does work well. It cannot, of course, remove deep gouges, only light scratches. http://www.meguiarsdirect.com/index.asp (external link)

For less than the cost of this product, you can just get a new LCD cover from Canon.

I take really good care of my 20D and still I didn't manage to avoid a huge and deep scratch on the lcd cover. I realised that what caused the mischief was the little plastic piece that adjusts the camera strap. It was rubbing against the lcd cover while in the bag. I've now slided the plastic piece towards the camera so it doesnt reach the lcd cover.

Hope it helps!!

I don't like the Zagg products. The material is durable, no doubt about that. But there are two major problems with it. First, it has a tendency to discolor with age. The plastic they use gets yellowish over time and will also gradually pick up stains from other materials that come into contact with it. Second, the surface is not smooth but a subtle mottled texture that does affect the appearance of the display.

It's a shame really, because the material is quite scratch resistant. The secret is that it is semi-soft, stretching/yielding to sharp pressure instead of being cut. But it doesn't work very well for displays. It is also very expensive. Just buy Canon's replacement cover.

Rather than start a new thread, did the OP manage to get the screen polished OK? The reason I ask is I've just found a scratch on my 1D3 (caused by the zip of a Lowepro RL200 bag which is now chucked) and need to fix it.
I saw those Zagg things will in Orlando last year. Nearly got one for my PDA if it wasn't for the fact I was changing it. Really good product.

FYI, just be careful using polishing products on the screen. I had a few scratches on my 50D screen and thought I'd try some Novus plastic scratch remover on it. All of the Novus did was cause a lot of damage to the anti-reflective coating of the screen. I was probably going to replace it anyhow, but after this experiment a new screen is on its way from Canon. :)

Perhaps if the older or lower end DSLRs have a plain plastic cover without anti-reflective coating you can try a scratch remover; otherwise just leave well enough alone or order a new cover from Canon Parts.

I got one of these for my 5D MIII, went on pretty easy: http://xoskins.com …mark-iii-screen-protector (external link) I believe it will also help hide scratches when applied.
