(1)I am interested in buying either a Powershot G2 or G3 on Ebay (UK) as a backup 'carry all the
time' camera to my 300D (Digital Rebel).

I haven't been able to find either of these cameras offered online by dealers, as a clue to their market price: I'll be grateful for any opinions as to the figure one should offer in an Ebay Auction

(2)I would also be glad to hear from anyone who has used BOTH of these cameras as to whether
they consider the G3 a significant improvement on the G2.

Don't know about prices in England, but in Hong Kong you'd pay about US$200 for a G2.

Although I use a G2, I would recommend a G3 if your decision is between the two. You get 4X Zoom (rather than 3X), 2- or 10-second timer, Time-lapse Recording, and Orientation Sensor with the G3.

Cheers,

Don

Hi Don -

Thanks for your reply: s/h camera prices in Hong Kong are obviously much lower than here - US$200 is roughly equivelent to £111 here - I expect up to £150 to be more likely.

I owned a G2 and a G3, each for about a year, and now have a Pro1. I definitely liked the G3 better than the G2. I thought of it as the camera the G2 should have been, or a v2 of the G2. Here are what I think are the advantages of the G3 over the G2...

- 4x zoom lens instead of 3x.

- Built-in neutral density filter. Important for flash fill in bright light, considering the max shutter speed of 1/250 with flash and the smallest lens opening of f8.

- 1/1250 shutter speed available with all lens settings vs 1/500 on the G2.

- Wireless remote can be set for no delay. Minimum two-second delay on G2.

- Manual focus forced to infinity works fine. On my G2 it didn't give as sharp pix as using autofocus on a distant object.

- Bayonet lens adapter

- Much better user interface

One more thing, the G3 has a focus lock option. It's very important if you are doing time-lapse using a remote capture program like GBTimelapse (see www.gbtimelapse.com (external link)).
