I used to do some lightning shots back in the old film days, but this is my first try with my 50D. Had a storm front come through earlier this evening and hit this.

Canon 50D, 17-55mm f/2.8. Exposure 30 seconds at f/8, ISO 100, 17mm focal length.

C&C always welcome.

I was sitting on my front porch under roof. I guess it was safe enough since I'm here to talk about it! :D

Wow! That is incredible. I would love to get a shot like that! Alas, we don't get too many good thunderstorms where I live.

I saw your shutter speed was 30 seconds and ISO was 100. Did you try and and time it or just hold the shutter open and see what you get?

Thanks! I really didn't try to time the shot; I just shot in manual mode with a 30 sec exposure and hoped for the best. I would have used bulb mode, but I don't yet have a remote shutter control for my camera. So I ended up just shooting about 50-60 30 sec shots and this is the shot that happened to hit. At least I didn't have to worry about wasting film like in the old days; it's great to have "free" exposures.

No doubt...! One of the best things about DSLR's... Makes astro shooting a bit less costly as well.....

I used to do a lot of astro shooting on my vintage 1975 Criterion 6" Dynascope (which I still have by the way!). I just remember shooting rolls and rolls of Tri-X and then turning our bathroom into a darkroom for the weekend to make the prints. After I graduated from IU-Bloomington, I kept in touch with one of my astronomy professors (I was an astrophysics major) and he gave me keys to the on-campus telescope after I graduated (12" f/15 refractor - hell of a lunar & planetary scope). A buddy and I used to go down there on the weekends and shoot tons of film with the old Minolta SRT-201 body. Ah.....the good old days.....
