I was just reading over a very interesting article about the difference between 16 bit and 8 bit images. So I checked my camera (50D) and saw that it can shoot in 14bit. If i'm not mistaken the camera will only shoot 14 bit when shooting raw and if its jpg then it can only shoot in 8 bit? Is this correct?
If so, are their cameras that shoot 16 bit images?

There probably are (I don't know), but I wouldn't lose sleep over it. 14bit is heaps more than a competent photographer needs.

Thanks for the article. That was an interesting read. I'm new to RAW and I found this pretty insightful.

I found it interesting too, but not for the same reason as you. I think it's interesting that the author had to use such unrealistically aggressive edits to "prove" the worth of 16-bit editing.

I'm not anti-high-bit - I use it in some of my work. But I think there is an unnecessary amount of hype about it.

Anyone with a brain can make an image show whatever they like. Process in RAW, tweak in PS, you'll be fine. All RAW adjustments are effectively in 16 bit mode.

IMO the 8-bit beach picture took that punishment surprisingly well, actually.

I was expecting a horrible posterization, considering the extent of the 'exercise'.

Yes, Phase One P+ series and Hasselblad H1 DII series but prepare to re-mortgage your house if you want one.
