Can someone please help!I am considering buying either the Sigma 18-128 HSM OS or the Sigma 17-70 F2.8-4.5 DC Macro lens!I just cant seem to make up my mind!I know the Sigma 17-70 gets rave reviews due to its sharpness vs money value enc.But I realy like the OS and the range of the 18-125.Though it gets mixed reviews.
Im looking for a good walkarond lens and have narrowed myself down to these 2!I can get the 17-70 for $50 cheaper!Im using a Canon Rebel Xti.Please help me decide!!!!!!!Wil the 18-125 suffice through abit of editing or will the 17-70 make me much happier?

But what do u guys/girls think?

A review at www.photozone.de (external link) says the 18-125 could have autofocusing problems, though the image sharpness was good. I have the 17-70 and like it a lot - it's quite sharp, has good contrast and focuses well. If you want the 18-125 I'd suggest making sure that the store has a reasonable return policy.

I also found this test by lightrules - a frequent contributor on another message board. It's quite positive about the 18-125: http://www.pbase.com/lightrules/18125os (external link)

I owned the 17-70 and liked it a lot but sold it because I wanted IS. I now have the 18-55IS "kit" lens and am looking for a lens that is longer and will work better as a walk around lens for me. So, I'm also interested in the 18-125OS and the upcoming 18-250OS.

Here (external link) is a good discussion and user review of the 18-125OS. Atif made some RAW files available for download that I played with. The results (external link) are here. Many of the shots are at 125mm where the lens is softest. I converted the RAW to JPG using DPP 3.6. Look at the comments under each image for conversion settings.

a faster lens is a faster lens. OS doesn't make up for slow glass, f/5.6 + IS (OS) doesn't let you shoot faster, it just helps you shoot slower without as much concern for camera shake.

A faster lens will allow you to shoot faster, nothing else.

Had a 17-70, loved it but upgraded to a 17-55.
