I'd be interested in any comparative reviews by people who have used both.

I'm looking to buy a good quality point and shoot. I had a Pro1, it got caught in the rain and died. Now I am torn between a second-hand Pro1 and a G10.

Any insights?

regards,
/alan

Personally if I were going to get something the size of a Pro1 I would just get a DSLR.

It's more a weight thing... the Pro1 weighs 640g including an 28-200mm (35mm equivalent) L series lens.

My 350D weighs 540g body only, and then you add a lens. My Sigma 18-200mm (not perfect, but better than most point and shoots cameras will give) is a further 610g - making a total of 1150g.

The 24-105mm L lens comes in at 670g, so that's 1210g.

The Pro1 has a lot going for it :-)

If weight is a concern and I were looking at something as big as the Pro1 I'd probably consider also an Olympus E-420 and a pancake lens, I think the body weighs like 440 grams plus a 25mm pancake (50mm equivalent, my favorite) weighs about 95grams.
Total weight 540 grams.

Even if you get a bigger lens it wont weigh that much more than a Pro 1 and the picture quality will be way better... especially at iso 200 and up.

That's just what I would consider,,, to each his own.

For that size and weight...pick up a panasonic G1...4/3 sensor...interchangeable lenses, and tiny size...SLR quality in a tiny body.

I have both cameras. Pro-1's strength is it's "L" lens, images are so beautiful even at poster size but it's way way way too sloooooooow in today's standard.

I have both and they both have advantages. The lens on the Pro 1 is fantastic and with enough light the noise isn't an issue. Even at 400 ISO the files are usable with a little noise reduction and proper exposure. The features on the Pro 1 are great as are they on the G10. The macro on the Pro 1 is fantastic.

I have been considering the new Panasonic GH1 to replace both of these cameras. Not out until June but the reviews of the original G1 have been pretty good and although not as small as either the G10 or Pro1, it looks like the results are incouraging.

Yes, I do like the look of the GH1 and the 140-140mm lens. But the price before my upcomgin holiday is going to be quite prohibitive...

One thing in favour of the Pro1 is that I could use it for a year or so, and then I'd only be discarding a £125 camera rather than a £400 one when I go for a GH1.

That's another reason I originally suggested an olympus e-420,,,
If I were going to spend nearly $400 US on something the size of a pro 1 with the budget of a G10 then I would think about the Olympus e-420 instead... i was in Fry's the other day and saw the body for $299 US http://shop4.frys.com …te=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG (external link) and if you wanted a kit lens I think it was only $50 or $100 more... Just a thought...

Personally, we have tested Canon's G cameras, and find them very useful as a compact back-up or a travel camera when carrying a 5D2 is just too much physical equipment... However, until Canon commences use of CMOS imagers therein, reducing noise, and increasing low light capabilities, 30fps 1080P HD capability I will refrain from actually buying one for our use.

Which CMOS digicam do you use instead of the (CCD) Canon G series?

An interesting discussion, guys... thanks.

It's made me think in terms of the upcoming Panny GH1... oh well, a few months before the summer holidays yet, so let's see what the next few weeks bring.

The GH1 will cost a lot more than G1 (Probably double with the monster kit lens)
