Would this work as a tracking "unit" on a 055XPROB tripod? I am using a Canon 20D and 150-500 OS lens. IT doesn't say how heavy a lens it will carry?

Or is there another affordable alternative like this?

Anyone? Buehler?
I just spent $1800 on an iMac and don't have money in the budget a fora telescope. Just need a tracking head to use with the above mentioned rig.

Thanks!

I agree with Ron. Many German equatorial mounts are heavy, especially one capable of supporting a good size lens and your camera. Add in the mount weight/counter weight and you will far exceed the safe limits of your tripod. Your camera and lens along are about the max for that tripod. Most equatorial mount tripods have 2-3+ inch diameter legs and heavy hardware. Sorry for the bad news Rick but the last thing you want is everything to end up on the ground. Check around at Astromart and see the products there for examples.

Congrats on the iMac. Got one for my wife and I've always been Mac based, great products, fun to use.

Thanks guys! I guess I will let the fund build up and buy the proper equipment then!

I also bought Aperture 2 with the iMac and find it much easier to use then PSE 6..This is also my first Mac computer and it takes a bit of retraining! No right click on the mouse!

I'd agree on the above comments and also highlight that to image at 500mm is starting to get into the "trickier" focal length area where the slightest movement anywhere (mount, tripod etc) can ruin a frame. My EQ6 mount doesnt cut it if there is more than a slight wind! You also need pretty good tracking to get decent length frames which does really mean a halfway decent GEM and a bit of practice at getting it close to perfect polar alignment.
