Touring cars @ Donington

A few more from the opening rounds of the BTCC along with its support races.
I now understand why others have slated Donington, from a photography point of view.

Andy, I can tell within two feet where you took those from. There isn't much of a choice as you have found out. The BTCC was naff and if it doesn't get more entries it will lose its appeal very quickly. I have a couple of BTCC assigments for the two meetings up here but I fear the FR's and Cupras will give the better racing, as they did at the weekend.

Nice shots! How is the blurring effect while panning accomplished?


Someone told me that you have to use 2nd curtain sync? Is there any truth to this?


Can this be accomplished shooting hand held or should you use a tripod or monopod?

Just stick the camera on TV mode and set the shutter speed to around 1/200th of a second to start of with, as you get more proficient you can drop the speed even more to get a greater blur. Then just focus on the car and pan as it screams past, if you're steady and fast enough, the car will be sharp but the background will be nicely blurred.

I was gutted.Thinking on the sunday morning - hmmmm i would'nt mind taking some shots of the next BTCC up at Donington DOH!.Sod it its today (thats bloody good planning ).

Ken - not sure I'll bother again - the only saving grace was I had a free ticket

Tom - I don't tend to use a monopod, I'm more comfortable hand-holding the 300F4. If it was one of the big guns (300F2.8 or 120-300F2.8) then that's a different matter...

Some nicely panned shots there Andy, did you see the big accident with the Clio, amazing how he got out without injury.

okay i'm shooting a gymkhana on sunday and I need a crash course in panning. never done it, never tried to.
20D with 70-200 F4 L.

AI servo right? I'm not trying to just spray and prey, i'd actually like to get some nice shots out of this day but it will be a lot to learn really fast...

and to top it off it looks like rain so out comes the big plastic bag (you had to read that thread, it really works).

ANY help....... is greatly appreciated.

Yep, AI servo, if you're not confident then bring a monopod so you smooth out the motion. Start out on 1/200th then drop it down as you get better! Trust me, it's very easy to pick up!

Thanks Ian. I was at Redgate when the safety car came out. I heard there had been more than one off, but I only saw the one that went backwards into the gravel.

Michael - do search for the thread titled "Panning" in this section. There was lots of good info in there.
