ID help

At first, I thought it was a sparrow, but could not find anything in Peterson's Bird Guide to match it. It is larger than the average sparrow. Its throat is white with a black patch on the chest -- I have a front shot that shows those feature, but it is a bit obscured by OOF leaves.

Bill I could be wrong but this looks like a male House Sparrow to me.

Male house sparrow for sure. The giveaway is the black throat and white cheeks.

Thanks, Stephen and JG. Using your ID, I found it in the Peterson's Bird Guide in the section with the finches. I see that it is not related to the American sparrows which explains why I did not see it listed originally.

Yes, they are!

Here is a front view showing the white cheeks and black throat. The field guide did not mention the prominent white dot behind the eye, perhaps because you need to get very close to see it. I have see lots of urban House Sparrows, but they did not look nearly as brightly colored as this rural House Sparrow and the field guide confirmed that there is a difference.

The image is a bit hazy looking around the bird's eye because there is an out-of-focus branch about two feet from the bird.
