Thanks, Stephen and JG. Using your ID, I found it in the Peterson's Bird Guide in the section with the finches. I see that it is not related to the American sparrows which explains why I did not see it listed originally.

Here is a front view showing the white cheeks and black throat. The field guide did not mention the prominent white dot behind the eye, perhaps because you need to get very close to see it. I have see lots of urban House Sparrows, but they did not look nearly as brightly colored as this rural House Sparrow and the field guide confirmed that there is a difference.
The image is a bit hazy looking around the bird's eye because there is an out-of-focus branch about two feet from the bird.
