My 5D will not work at all now and just shows "error 30". It appears the shutter is not working. I have tried uninstalling battery with and without grip and have even removed the time/date battery a couple of times.

I have searched the net fairly extensively on this issue and found quite a lot of 5D MKII owners with this issue but nobody seems to say much on how or if they resolved it, as seems more common on brand new cameras and cameras in cold conditions. This is not my case as I live in the subtropics and my camera is 4 months old.

Anyone resolved this issue without sending to Canon for service?

Need this camera for an important shoot in 10 days time.

Here is another thread discussing the same issue. Looks like a trip back is needed.

Thanks I had posted on that thread but had no response.
Some posters mentioned they might have to send camera for service but didn't state what the outcome actually was.

Some also had intermittent problems whereas mine just won't work.
I have since found someone who actually switched to live view then back to normal shooting mode and it fixed the problem. I am at work so will try that tonight. Also might try resetting camera settings to factory default.

Any other suggestions or resolutions out there?

send it in, and get a new one / fixed one in return. seems silly to try and self-fix with a brand new camera that has plenty of warranty.

I've never got one error...send it to Canon and don't forget to ask for pre-paid label from them.

Well as I said in my OP I have to use this camera in 10 days - last Canon service issue took 30 days, so this is why I am trying to solve this without Canon's help.

After surfing every forum on this error today I have done the following.
1. Updated the firmware to 1.07.
2. Took out all batteries including date/time and recharged all batteries (all geniune)
3. Took off battery grip (also genuine product)
4. Reformatted card.
5. Put on original kit lens (24-105)
6. Reset all settings to factory default (thats going to be a pain)
7. Turned on LIve view - took photo - yippee it worked.
8. Turned off Live view and took photo in manual as normal and yes all is okay (touchwood)

My feeling is as I share cards between 30D and this camera I always format a card as soon as I put into camera. Possibly I did not reformat correctly or as I found on another forum a poster had used the Live View to reactivate the shutter.

So fingers crossed with this. If it holds out for the next couple of weeks and I have the problem again - yes she will be off to Canon Service as fast as I can post it.

Hopefully this info may be of help to someone else.

Wow, I'm glad you found a potential solution. Let us know how it works going forward. If I get this error while on a shoot, at least I can limp the camera long... or I guess I could just jump to my back-up... but I don't want to! :)

Well worked fine for a day. Got out of camera bag next day and you guessed it "Error 30" please turn off camera remove batteries, blah blah. etc...

So off to Canon Service she will go for a month or so holiday. No doubt it will be returned with the usual "working fine no fault detected" report that I have got in the past..:(

I wonder at what point people are going to call it like it is...... this camera has serious issues. This is smelling like more Canon BS with shabby build quality and control, expecting the customer to just keep on sending it in and dealing with it.

I think I just may have talked myself into the D700 I keep checking out... ;)

Oh yes, there aren't any happy 5D Mark II owners anywhere to be found. Certainly none that haven't had any problems. God only knows the D700, every single one of them, is flawless.

I've not had a single problem with my 5D Mark II. I know 3 other people with 5D Mark II that shoot even more than I do, and guess what? Not a singe problem with their cameras.

People like to talk about the 5DMk2's "black dot" problem and cite it as a reason to not buy one.

Oops, looks like the D700 had the same problem.

If you want a Nikon, go get one. But claiming all 5DMk2's are defective is a bit over the top when there are thousands and thousands of happy owners that have no problems with their cameras.

You really want to compare the failure rate of the D700 to the 5D MKII?

I never said 'all' of them have issues or fail, don't do that. I said the camera has serious issues, and it does on a worldwide user base scale. And given the way Canon has been handling obvious defects in some of it's products, ya I smell more BS.

I don't care one way or the other, I just want stuff that works. I mean when people trashed the D2H for it's metering and FF error issues I didn't get all pissy about it, hey it was a huge problem. Nikon screwed up, much like Canon appears to be lately on some fronts, I think Nikon handles it better, Canon? Not so much.

Huh??

Thousands upon thousands are buying this camera and having wonderful success with it - one of the best selling cameras around. One or two people report some defects and suddenly "this camera has serious issues"?

What camera doesn't have some rejects when it comes off the line? The same goes for computers and all other electronics. The ones you hear about online are the complainers. The ones with no problems just go about creating great results. (See my blog for some wonderful examples - including today's post)

Nope, he says it's problem ridden and Canon's QC sucks, so he must be right. Apparently Nikon has never made a defective camera. I wish I had known that before buying Canon.

Darn it. I guess my perfect 5D Mark II really has a hidden defect, I just haven't found it yet. :D
