Well I really love the 5D Mark II (when it works - just kidding), and I am really pleased with the performance, it's just I seem to be unlucky with anything that has electronics in it.
I have had three digital SLR's and all have had to go back to Canon for warranty issues. Also had a couple of new cars with intermittent electronic faults that could not be fixed.
Hey some people win the lottery twice whilst others never do, just luck I guess.
Will be happy again when I can get this problem fixed.
This morning this camera works perfectly, now it has the error again. We have had some awful humid wet weather the last couple of weeks and the camera has been stored away in a cupboard, so this could be an issue.

I have had great success with my 5D MKII, but as with most anything out there sometimes the first batch have a few issues. Send it back and let Canon take care of it. they do check them out. Most of the time when you get back a can not find a problem note from the manufacture, it simply means they were not able to duplicate your problem. If your camera is giving an error code that often I am sure they will be able to duplicate it. Still be sure to give them as much infomation as you can. the more info the tech has the better they can reslolve the issue.
I was a camera repair technician for almost 30 years, and sometimes just like when you take a car to the mechanic they just wont miss behave for the doctor.

Please don't mention the washing machine - 6yrs old so far all okay (quality european brand).
I think this problem is the joys of a new model, usually there are some hiccups, and the law of averages means some of us will have problems.

Thanks for the good advice about providing as much info as possible, and for some reason I seem to get the intermittent issues which I know can be difficult to replicate.

Well worked fine for a day. Got out of camera bag next day and you guessed it "Error 30" please turn off camera remove batteries, blah blah. etc...

So off to Canon Service she will go for a month or so holiday. No doubt it will be returned with the usual "working fine no fault detected" report that I have got in the past..:(

As promised here is what happened...

Yep took 5 weeks and yes can back with the we can't find the fault. Never mind I sent a whole A4 page of ways to get the fault and how I tried to fix it. Evidently on Canon US website if you type in Error 30 it comes back Shutter failure.
Anyway they attached a note "we have replaced shutter assembly anyway".
Well (at the moment anyway) it works, so fingers crossed.

Hope this will help out anyone with a similar problem with their 5D MKII.

Hey guys, just had "error 30" today during the middle of a shoot, needless to say I was pretty angry about it. I came home and checked around a bit and asked another friend who ran into the same problem. He told me to give it a good smack and it should go back to normal. I did so and it magically started working again, I know this isnt necessarily the proper way to fix the problem, but if you are at a shoot and you get the error, this may save your butt.

My buddy also told me that he brought the camera to Canon to take a look at it and they said they couldn't get the camera to do the same thing again. So far both of our cameras are working normally.

To answer any questions, I'm using sandisk cards, Canon glass, and Canon batteries with the grip. I've also just updated the firmware to 1.1.0.

I hope this helps out a bit until there is a proper solution to this problem!

sounds like sticky shutter or loose connection. it's probably one of those low percent of defect for the QC department. w/ any manufacturing, defect is always a concern. don't think nikon do not have problem, all electronic devices out there expect to have defects. one batch is different from another batch.

Sorry gambit just came across this old thread by accident but I will let you know my experience.

Yes 1st repair took 5 weeks sorry for that bad news. Well it worked fine for 1 day and yep you guessed it stuffed up again, this time worse would not work at all, ahhhh.

I rang the store I brought it from (them being a Pro Dealer) thought they may be able to speed things up for me - (did not return my calls - won't be buying locally again).

Next rang Canon service again quoted my last repair number, managed to get a
sympathy ear and explained my frustation of already losing my camera for 5 weeks.
As I was going away on Photography workshop in the next couple of weeks he asked me to note the day I needed the camera back by on my repair form.

The camera was returned to me in about 8 days and has been working beautifully touch wood.

They could not replicate fault again (of course:() but this time they replaced the mirror assembly as well - so I now have new shutter and mirror.
Hope this helps, somehow!

Thanks sunnygirl, Sounds like you got the run around with your local camera shop, i decided to send mine direct into the canon service department in north ryde yesterday express post, hope they get it today and then start work on it.

Lucky for me i have a backup 40D, so that has been alright but none the less very upsetting to have a brand new camera die on me :(

I hope they replace the entire shutter assembly, as in my case err30 is quite easy to replicate, what ever combination of CF cards, lenses or batteries i use it produces the error message. Hopefully its faster than 5 weeks!! damn thats ages!

Hope all goes well gambit. In my case I thought it would have been a nice gesture to extend my warranty by a couple of months, but I guess Canon does not offer the same level of customer service that I do.
Really just thrilled to having a working full frame camera, and yes I do have the 400D as a backup but you know what, I don't think it's too much to expect a reliable camera for $4000, IMHO.:)

The same problem... :(
Does anybody have a clue how much it cost to fix it if I send it to canon?
