I don't believe the 40D accommodates for a wireless remote.

There's a shutter port on the side of the 40D. Did you miss that?

I used a Cactus wireless shutter release from Gadget Infinity. There are some misfires when the flash is attached and sometimes it'll trigger twice. Otherwise, I'm fine with those minor issues. Works well for my 50D, now.

Canon makes some and I think the POTN shutter release works, too.

A good cheap wired one can be had on eBay for around $9 with shipping. Look for the ones that say "JIANSI" on them.

I think everyone should at least have a wired release since the Chinese knockoffs are so cheap on eBay!

Most of them have a friction type connector, the Canon has a better locking mechanism. Also, the "feel" of the release on the cheap ones are not very good, and they wear out quickly.

I ended up getting a Canon one after using the cheap knockoff for four years (not too bad considering the price), but I think the middle ground is for a higher quality, yet cheaper one with the locking mechanism like this one:

I've got one of the cheap eBay wired triggers. It works really well. All depends on how far away from the camera you need to be, and if you want to be in the photos. I got mine for use when shooting fireworks, etc.(long exposures on a tripod). Mine is from Yonguouo or something like that, it's just a simple mechanical switch, and seems to be built pretty well.

I got the WR-A100 by Satechi through Amazon. It is an RF wireless rechargeable remote that works quite well. The receiver that plugs into the camera can also be used as a wired shutter release in addition to the remote that can be used up to 100 feet. I paid $69.00 USD at the time, but it has gone up to $79.00.

I was just going to get the Canon wired release, but this was only a few bucks more and hundreds of dollars cheaper than Canon's wireless model. Satechi has awesome cutomer service to boot.

I use a Canon RS-80N3 remote release for wired triggering. Good quality product (as you would expect from Canon).

I also recently got the PocketWizard remote release cable. This turns a standard PocketWizard into a wireless remote trigger for the camera. Obviously a more expensive solution, but a very reliable one. If you already own PocketWizards, it isn't that much of an expense. $80 USD at B&H for the CM-N3-P cable. This setup has the added benefit of not only triggering the camera shutter, but also any flash that is attached to a PocketWizard. I was recently photographing a very old book for a friend. I had three lights set up to give even lighting across the pages, each triggered by a PocketWizard, one on the camera to trip the shutter, and one in hand to set it all off. Worked great.

I also recommend buying from Teamspeed. The wireless remote set he's selling also has wireless flash control capability.

Got one of them as well. They included a free wired remote.
