The tulip in the photo must be reflecting mainly red spectrum light to cause this problem which I think is not totally CA. I think it may be that at the transition from red to background the green and blue pixels have no info so register black hence the fringe.
Is this correct and is it the only real problem that digital has over film?
Can it be rectified with RAW processor other than DPP?

The worst effect is when the tulip/red is out of focus(depth of field)

But it still is a problem even when in focus.

Do I just have to be aware of this limitation or is there an easy workaround.

the transition from red to green in the centre of the bootom image the red does not just stop, there is a darkening then the background green. I have not tried viewing it on my CRT just my 3 month old HD laptop screen(3months old)

I've looked long and hard, and I just can't see it, sorry.

"Not seein' it here, Lloyd!"

Me either. However, it does give that same effect when viewing a website with lettering the same vivid red shade on a dark BG. Looks like the red is 'hovering' off the screen.
