My g/f and I are ready to purchase two 50D's (one each) and I am also going to purchase a 24-105mm f/4.0L. I have almost talked her into getting the 24-105 as well, but not quite.

I will also be purchasing some sort of filter (B&W or Hoya) for the lens and a Canon battery grip. If she gets the lens she will also purchase the same filter as I do. She is holding out on the grip to see how the camera feels with and without.

I am going to give the local photo shop a try with the sale. But, every in store camera shop I have visited always have insanely high prices. Am I joking myself to even think they will match online stores with such a purchase? What about the online retailers like Abes of Maine, B&H, or Adorama? I doubt Amazon will budge being they have such high sales.

Thanks for any experience you can offer.

I have had sucess getting BestBuy to match Amazon... but you will still have to pay tax. Plus Cashback from B&H.... Online is kinda the only way to go.

You may get a little break from Allen's Camera in Levittown, PA. His prices are in line with B&H, Adorama, etc. but is basically a small local store. Many here buy from him as well as NY Times photogs and pro shooters. I have bought most of my equipment, new and used, from him.

Nothing wise or clever to enlighten you with!

I like helping out the little guy but you could end up paying A LOT more on all the gear. B&H with no sales tax will save you alot. Can't hurt to give them a call and ask for a break for buying it all at once.

I would try calling B&H and Adorama as well, you never know until you try.

I know I'm off topic, but have you considered not getting the exact same lens so that each of you will have 2 lenses at your disposal instead of one?

definitely don't buy 2 identical lenses. as far as 24-105L goes, there's always new ones for sale here from ppl that picked up a 5D kit or something. they end up offing the kit lens to come out with a better deal for the body itself. if you're patient and willing to wait, you might find some good deals on either a new or slightly used one. ive seen them go for $875 or so.

5D II Gripped / 24-105 f4L / 50mm f1.4 / 70-200 f2.8L IS / 100mm Macro / 135L / Zeiss 21 / Zeiss 100MP / 430EX / Manfrotto 055XPROB, 488RC2 / Broke as a joke :p

I am definitely looking to use the live.com cashback, but I think the purchase must be made through the web site. I will call B&H as well as Adorma and Abes of Maine to see what they can do.

I went to the local Showcase today with all my prices in hand from the online merchants. They are not able to match prices and want like $400 more for just 1 50D and 24-105

I'm in Atlanta, so that is a little distant for me. Thanks for the info anyhow.

I definitely see why I have been buying all my gear online versus the rip off local shop(s)!!

Too bad they won't be shipping orders for over a week :(

I was thinking about the 24-70 before narrowing the choice down to the 24-105. I usely don't shoot low light where I have to stop down to 2.8. After reading threads discussing the two, we've come to the agree we'd rather lose the speed and have the reach. It will compliment my 70-200mm f/2.8L IS quite nicely since I now keep the 1.4 extender on it 95% of the time.

I am going to give the used market a try since Adorama and B&H are not shipping for a bit. If I get a deal by then, I'll jump on one. I already sent 1 PM so we will see :) But, I don't see the big deal about us both having the same lens. We have quite a few other lenses as well.

I've used B&H and Adorama. I wasn't happy with B&H's shipping at one time, but otherwise no complaints. I also like Abes of Maine :)

Thanks to all for the feedback!!
