Most of the images look pretty noisy for 1600 ISO.
Which ones? Yuko is shot at 3200.
On #2 I opened up the shadows and brightened the image in LR.
I'm not bothered by the noise in these by the way. It's not like ISO 1600 on a 1D classic
Also, NR in LR was at 0/8 or so. I really don't think LR does a very good job at NR, chroma NR especially sucks.
I really like #2. #6 creeps me out, but I like it anyways. Think I would have made #5 B+W, but that's just me.
B&W might work. And then add a ton of "grain" probably. I want to experiment with that anyway. Mostly I prefer film for B&W over digital however, so I need to work on that.
1 and 3 are boring, and I like the moment in 7.
Agree fully that #1 is boring: Nothing happened the one song I was shooting, but like the concentrated look in #3.
I can imagine why you didn't pick the guy alone, indeed "a bit" OOF.
Focus is on the hair
Quite difficult to not get AF on the mic.
According to the Exif some of the photos are 3200, which is indeed pretty noisy on a 1D2. And I can imagine why René has chosen to use 3200...
Yeah, and even that was not enough... Should have used 3200 on the other two "Music Mining" performances as well.
# 4 is my favorite although I would have cropped 4x5 aspect to eliminate some of the dark space up top. Excellent color on that one.
I never crop different then 2:3, but agree that this image would benefit from it.
I'd have liked to include a bit more at the bottom, but the head of the drummer was in the way (it's still visible in the bottom left)
#'s 2 and 3 have a cool feel to them. I like that feel.
Glad I'm not the only one
As for the blocked up reds...it happens when the lighting is like that. Not much one can do. Seems Dwight needs to get out into the trenches occasionally.

I knew I'd get comments on that image, but I also knew I'd probably get clipping when I shot it. I did try a few different exposures, to see what would work best: A non clipped red channel, or an overall better exposed image with a clipped red channel.
IMO in this case a bit of clipping looks more natural.
Oh, I agree, but you see, Rene has made a career out of seeking out "blockage" in other people's images so he should stand ready to be held to the question himself! But let me also be the first to admit that Rene's constant onslaught against color mismanagement has dramatically improved the quality of my images, even without visiting the trenches.
Thanks
And yeah, I prefer to get critique over "nice image"... I want to learn as well as teach here
