Looks like a new D60 with a swivel screen and I'm assuming 720p video. Looks pretty legit to me.

Hard to know. But for the target audience I suspect the screen will be a winning feature for no reason other than it's familiar to many with a P&S. The rumour had been a new D400 some time soon, but the D300 is stiill more than competitive with everything below the 5D mk II.

an articulating lcd screen is very useful, more useful than you think when it comes to saving your back from getting up and down so frequently. i've always said that if canon combines the canon s5 P&S with the canon 5d mark ii, you will have an unstoppable dslr.

looks like nikon made the move first. canon is going to lose market share in the next few years if they continue to ignore the features that they make available for their consumer line but not their pro line.

Someone has to uphold the I'm-a-tough-guy-who-doesn't-need-an-articulating-screen image :)

I don't think that most pros are going to change because of the consumer features, but it is disturbing that Canon has clearly become a follower. It seems that last few major advancements have come from other manufacturers and Canon is playing catch up.

Nikon needed a new D60 level body badly. Canon has announced 3 since the D60 came out. I wonder if it will still be AF-s only.

The screen is cool, but I can't see it being a deciding factor over the canon T1i. It says 720p, so maybe that is why Canon put in the crippled 1080p 20fps mode. Then you can pick between the screen on te Nikon or the 1080p mode on the Canon.

Honestly, I'm more insterested to see what Nikon will do with the D400 that was breifly mentioned on that page. That is the level of camera where Canon has a big hole.

I believe that the crippled 1080 is because the sensor only has two data buses, not 4 as the 50D has. It's a data throughput issue.

I agree, The 50D is just too close to the xxxD series and way too far from the 1D series. The Nikon xxxD series seems to be a great in between camera and they have done much better servising the enthusiest.

I think that is probably the technical reason, but then why include it at all if they can't do 30fps at least? That is why I think it is just marketing. They can put 1080 on the box so it looks good next to Nikon's competitor camera.

I kept hearing rumors of a 7D crop cam with more "pro" features so let's hope it pans out.

Am I mistaken in remembering the new Canon T1i has an articulated screen as well?

Everyone thought it would have one, but the final release did not. Maybe the upgrade to the XS will have one?

Just wait. If this turns out to be true, all the Canonites that have been speculating about the next new fantasy body and wanted an articulating screen, will be moaning about how useless a feature it is because Nikon had it first.

I do agree that Canon has a major flaw in its lineup, insofar as they have crippled their XXD models to keep them differentiated from their bigger siblings. However, Canon's major failing, is their business model and how they approach bringing in consumers to a DSLR from a P&S.

Nikon has a better progression of models. They are pretty smart about their consumer line in making them so simple and doing a lot of processing in-camera to make images that are pleasing to someone moving up from a P&S. They may have limited functionality, but they have pleasing results, and the P&S shooter either loves the system and stays with the consumer line or they become more involved in DSLRs and make the progression to their prosumer models armed with more knowledge about how DSLRs work and the advantages of RAW. By the time they get a D300 or D700, they are well aware of how an unprocessed image looks and are not likely to 'jump ship' because they realize it needs PP'ed. Nikon isn't perfect, but their business model seems to be working, and I can see why.
