This is kind of a pointless thread I guess...and I know this is going back a ways...way back, circa 2006 I believe.

Anyway, I recently sold my 30D...my first DSLR. I'm on the usual POTN gear cycle, so I didn't even think twice about it. Well...a week later regret began to creep in. Fast forward a month or two and I have a nice "new" 20D sitting on my doorstep when I got home from work today. After a couple dozen shots with the 20D I feel totally satisfied.

Does anyone else have an attraction for the gear that they started out with? There is just something about the 20D/30D that I just love for some reason. The 5D, 5DII, D700, 1DIII, etc. are just upgrades in my mind. Okay, well maybe the 5D was special (my intro to "35mm")...but you know what I mean...right?

Maybe I'm just attempting to wax philosophic because I survived another layoff today...

Cheers POTN.

Congratulations on surviving the layoff.

As for gear, each setup makes you learn to be a certain kind of photographer, or to learn the limitations and attributes of your equipment. Do I miss the capabilities of my former cameras? No. I upgraded to accomplish things i couldn't with the gear I had.

Haahahaa, Wow. Funny thing is, Im going to pick up my "New" 20D tommorrow. What a coincidence. Only it wasn't a nostalgia thing for me. I just don't really need anything more than a 20D.It does everything I need a camera to do.

I'm on my second 20D since 2005. The first 20D was issued to me as a backup camera for a 1D MkII..The 20D became my work horse..

The second 20D I bought 2nd hand off a fellow POTNer 12 months ago.

Great camera!!

I've never had any proper experience with film (just 110 and cheap 35mm), so I really don't know what I/ve missed out on. I'm one of the multitudes of digital p&S to DSLR converts. The whole p&s experience was fun in a way but also confusing and frustrating. Getting the 30D was like flipping a switch in my mind and that is when I really developed a passion for photography.

Thanks...and yeah, I really enjoy my 5DII. I shoot a lot of low light stuff, and it really does add to my abilities to capture certain images. Also, the FF + 35L combo is sort of magical for me. I could spend a lifetime learning that 35mm view.
I think you're right about a setup making you learn to be a certain type of photographer. I started out with a 30D and 50 1.4, and I think I still tend to produce my best stuff when I'm shooting with a single focal length. That's where my base is. But then, I'm not sure what I like or missed about the XXD bodies...maybe just a sense of familiarity.

I'm glad someone can appreciate my dry sense of humor. I totally agree with your last sentence. Honestly, I could probably be pretty darn happy with a 20D and a 28 f/1.8....but don't tell my wife that. ;)

Yes, it really is a great balance of functionality/features...a true workhorse, and a steal these days.

Nah, Your missing nuffink'. If your shots make you happy, who gives a (you can guess the rest), if your lucky enough to have clients and they can't tell, even better.

I'm currently trying to trade my 5D for a 40D. It was my workhorse camera before upgrading to the 5D. I miss my 40D...

It's funny because my "old" 30D, which I had passed on to my son as an "indefinite loan", has now showed up in my place being as he's in the midst of some turmoil.

Now, I guess it's just a matter of time before the XTi I bought for my daughter shows up on my doorstep. It's hard enough choosing between my two regular bodies...:)!

I am nostalgic for a 40D, which was my 2nd DSLR after the original Digital Rebel. I sold it to save up for my 5D, which is awesome (and I'm not going to give it up), but I still want another 40D because I really loved that thing.
