Lots of hot spots, and they seem over exposed. It's tough to shoot at that time of the day, harsh shadows and hot spots to deal with. The first one seems over processed, the second one is better. How were you metering and where were you metering from? Seems like you metered off the jersey, which would cause everything else to be blown out.

looks like the first one was way underexposed and tried to bring it back in PP. second one is better but i agree that the harsh sun makes shooting difficult. not bad though.

Camera Make: Canon
Camera Model: Canon EOS 40D
Image Date: 2009:04:01 15:32:12
Flash Used: No
Focal Length: 200.0mm
CCD Width: 4.33mm
Exposure Time: 0.0013 s (1/800)
Aperture: f/3.5
ISO equiv: 200
White Balance: Manual
Exposure: Manual
Exposure Mode: Manual

above is the exif of your 1st image posted - IMHO I probably would have used ISO 400 to get the SS higher.

Camera Make: Canon
Camera Model: Canon EOS 40D
Image Date: 2009:04:01 17:07:31
Flash Used: No
Focal Length: 135.0mm
CCD Width: 9.27mm
Exposure Time: 0.0010 s (1/1000)
Aperture: f/3.5
ISO equiv: 200
White Balance: Manual
Exposure: Manual
Exposure Mode: Manual

exif for your 2nd image is above - in you 2nd image you increased your ss to 1/1000 but again IMHO I would have used ISO 400 to get the SS higher.

I guess what I saying is that for T&F SS I would use a faster SS, especially when I have plenty of ISO to work with.

Wow was surprised to see what was my rival school growing up. As said already that there are hot spots on skin. Exposure was right for the orange but not skin tones.

... Exposure was right for the orange...

I just checked the color gamut of the images posted and both have some color gamut issues - meaning that they will not print the colors as they appear.

Also the first image posted is saved in a Canon sRGB ( sRGB v 1.31 Canon) and the 2nd in the more popular sRGB

Thanks for the advice. I made a few test shots before the races to figure out what I needed. Decided on being able to see faces and overexpose the areas in the sun. I'll up the SS next time out. I like the pics of the runners coming at you. Should I have shot from the sunny side and panned? Totally different look but the overall exposure would have been better.

NVcameraman.... :p Go Meteors!!!!

Shooting from the sunny side would put you almost in back of the runner which isn't really a good shot. Panning is also difficult if you have a full race and other runners may be in the way of the one you want to photograph. I would suggest getting permission to get on the track beyond the finish line and try and get the runner coming directly at you over the last two hurdles. Most HS track meets are pretty laid back and the officials don't mind as long as you ask and stay out of the way.
