This is my first post, so please don't shoot me...

After spending way too much time learning from this forum I finally purchased a 40D and a MF SMC Takumar 50mm f1.4. :D The problem now is I don't have an adapter and am quite confused as to what kind I should get. :( At first I thought I needed one with the flange to push in a pin, but now I've read that this flange will not work with the SMC version.

Please Help!!! Which version adapter do I need and do I need to make any modifications to the pins?

Thanks,
-QS

BTW, I didn't want the plastic Canon AF 50mm 1.8 and think the 1.4 is just too much $$$ for what you get.

Get one without the flange. The flanged adapters are for lenses which don't have auto/manual switches for the aperture.

The SMC Tak 50/1.4 is an excellent little lens...buttery smooth focus action, very sharp. I use one on my 5D with a standard M42/EOS adapter.

Thanks for the quick replies! I'll be sure and get the standard adapter.

Did you have to modify your 5D to make it work? I've read that this lens will hit the mirror otherwise.

Yeah, but made the mod to the lens instead...I had to file down the rear lens ring just about a millimeter or so. Not a big deal...just needed to be careful and the whole process took about 10 minutes (most of that time was spent applying masking tape to the backside of the lens for protection). Works like a champ. You shouldn't have any problems on the crop camera.
