Zeiss "Lens Cloths" are NOT for camera lenses. I had no idea...

I sent an email to Zeiss, complaining about the filmy streaks left on my lens by their Zeiss "lens cloth" product (180-packs on Amazon, etc.). To my surprise, it turned out that this product was not intended for lenses.

Here is their response. I "XXXX-ed" out the personal info.

Dear XXXX,

The product you refer to is sold by the Carl Zeiss Vision division and is intended for use on eyeglasses and not multi-coated camera lenses. I have forwarded your message to them for follow-up.

The Carl Zeiss Camera Lens Division has a line of lens cleaning products which can be purchased through any of our authorized dealers. These include a lens cleaning fluid in a pump spray bottle, pre-moistened lens cleaning cloths and microfiber cloths. I have attached a list of these dealers for your reference. Alternatively, you can use any quality lens cleaning products that are designed for camera lenses.

I also have these, although I only use them for my glasses.

The side of the box features glasses, a computer monitor, and a camera. The back says "Convenient cleaning of: prescription eyeglasses, scopes and binoculars,..., camera lenses." It even says "Pre-moistoned, non-abrasive lens cloths safely and quickly clean any lens, especially those with Zeiss anti-reflective multi-layer coatings. High-tech ammonia-free formula cleans effectively without leaving streaks or residue."

Each lens cloth package Also states that last quote on the back of it.

You weren't tricked into believing this by the name of the product, you were lied to by the package. False advertisement.

Here is a follow up email that I sent to the contact at Zeiss. Maybe he made a mistake and wrote to me about some other "Lens Cloth".

-----
Thank you for your prompt response. Since I have not heard from the parties to whom you forwarded my complaint, I’m emailing you to suggest that Zeiss reexamines this product’s package design.

Specifically, I call your attention to the picture of a camera that appears on three sides of the box. I must also point out that the back of the box clearly states that these lens cloths are for the “Convenient cleaning of camera lenses”, as well as other items. Finally, the packet itself claims that the Zeiss Lens Cloths clean any lens, “especially those with Zeiss anti-reflective multi-layer coatings”.

I suspect that I am one of many people who made the natural mistake of purchasing these “Lens Cloths” for use on camera lenses as a result of Zeiss’ package design and product use description.

I must ask Zeiss to exchange these 180 “Lens Cloths” for another product, which is more appropriate for camera lenses.

If it leaves streaks on lenses shouldn't it leave streaks on glasses too?

However, the microfiber cloth I use work for my shades too.

I don't have any eyeglasses to try this on, but the result of the Zeiss Lens Cloths on my Canon lens is a disgusting, scummy, iridescent film that can only be wiped off with a different brand of wipe. Yuck!

I can confirm that it doesn't streak on glasses. Not sure why, but it doesn't.

I have some of those too, from Sams Club. They say on the back of the foil pack "safely quickly clean any lens, especially those with Zeiss anti-reflective multi-layer coatings"....
