Just a wishful thought...

For those using live view viewable is a histogram visible on the LCD that changes with the scene coming thru the viewable?

and....

Wouldn't a histogram that changes while zooming in on the recorded photo also be a real useful tool?

I beleive they already have done this. Ill have to search for a minute to figure out how to turn it on.

Basically its liveview that shows the exposure and it can also display a histogram that updates as you move the camera or change settings.

"To bring up the Histogram display, you have to turn on the Live View exposure simulation option under Custom Function IV: Operation/Others. Unfortunately, the histogram is not translucent as I'm used to seeing on digital cameras with live histograms, so it blocks a significant part of the frame. You can turn it on and off with a few presses of the Info button, however. Not shown in the photo above is the optional grid for framing and alignment."

Try that, I think its what your looking for.

Hrmm, I cant really come up with a scenario that would make a 'live review' histogram any more worthwile than a real time histogram while using live view. I'm sure someone could/would find that useful but 'real useful' might be a bit of a stretch.

But Live View is not with the aperture at the actual shooting size, stopped down, and the shutter speed is not at the momentarily open shutter but a continuously operating one. So what should a histogram show, in light of that?!

Live histogram works on my Mark III and it simulates the exposure too. You've gotta turn it on though, it's not the default setup.

I've been playing with a 40D and its live view function for a couple of days...I don't yet know all its insandouts just yet...thanks for the helpul reply...yes...I should've done a search first...too quick to q

The thought came to me as I zoomed in on a photo and of course the cropped area was significantly different from the whole frame and was wondering what the histogram would look like...it's kinda like wanting the histogram that changes in photoshop but in the camera as you zoom so you could adjust the exposure either as you zoom in after the shot if you choose to...of course the histogram changes when you zoom before the shot...but sometimes it would be nice to see it adjust afterwards too...

I would imagine it will show the histogram that you would get, if you took the shot at that instant, with the settings you have applied.

Neither of my DSLRs has live view, but my bridge camera can show the histogram whilst you are composing the shot. If it is in M, or you apply EC, you can watch the histogram moving to the left or right according to how much you increase or decrease the settings. That allows you to adjust the settings to avoid clipping, expose to the right, centre the histogram (if DR is low enough) etc.

You don't have to actually stop the lens down and trip the shutter to get an accurate 'live' histogram.

Thanks for the explanation...now I need to go home and play with it!

I don't think a histogram would be useful for magnified regions. By definition, the histogram is tied to the whole frame, it gives an idea of the exposure.
However, blinking clipped areas should be used for magnified portions instead. Blinking in red, green or blue, depending of the clipped color channel, or even cyan, magenta or yelloy, if two channels are blown.

OK, Live View histogram works per post #3 instructions. The lens does indeed stop down and/or the LCD image is reduced in brightness. I haven't played enough with it to figure out when it decides to stop down or not. It might be in the owner manual.
