Hi everyone! I just wanted to introduce myself! I'm Gina! I've been lurking for weeks now, trying to get as much information as I can before I purchase my first DSLR in a couple of weeks! I am leaning towards the Rebel XS + kit lens. Any other lens suggestion for a beginner?

Thanks a bunch! :)

Welcome! :D The Canon 55-250 IS would be my vote. It can be found for $200 used or $250 new and is a good value, especially when paired with the kit lens (18-55).

great suggestions.
If I had to add one, how about the 50 1.8 (about $85)?
If you plan to shoot indoors or in low light, a prime lens could prove to be invaluable.

*I should listen to my own advice and get a prime, too. Problem is the one I have my eye set on will set me back $450. :(

Welcome Gina!

I vote for the 50 1.8 as well. But if you plan on doing portraits, a really great lens to get would be the 85 1.8. It can be had for around $300.

how about try selling your kit lens then buy Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 and add a little for nice zoom like 70-200mm F/4L non-IS.

FTR, the kit lens in the XS has Image Stabilization. I wouldn't be so quick to replace it (it's the same kit lens that comes with the XSi.)

Hi Gina and welcome. Relative newbie here as well. This place will really help accelerate the learning curve for you. Lots of great people willing to help without making you feel like a complete idiot! And trust me, these cameras and DSLR in general can make one feel pretty dumb sometimes!

I would skip the 50mm 1.8. The 85mm 1.8 is a good lens. Maybe something like the canon 55-250mm IS lens. Later on, you could upgrade the kit lens for the Tamron 17-50mm

i will just say ... welcome to POTN.
See you around.

my 2 cents....
+1 50mm. Why: makes you use feet as a zoom.
You think about composition more w/ a prime.
Since it is a fast lens - you don't have to use flash indoors.

Later,
_Mark

Hi Gina, welcome to the forum. Don't be tempted to try to run before you can walk. Have a good play with the camera and kit lens, then you'll start to find out for yourself what other lenses you might want to try. Good luck!

Best advice so far IMO.

Welcome to the forums.

Too many people wander in, buy a camera and more than one lens and then sell it because their shots aren't as good as people that have been shooting a lot longer - they can't figure out why because it's the same lenses that were recommended to them.

Stick with the kit lens for now, there's nothing wrong with it. Maybe later on add a bit more reach and a prime, but above all, enjoy what you do. In the meantime, unless you're going to be walking around taking snapshots, look into a reasonable tripod. I'd put that way ahead of more lenses.

Cheers.
