I've got the 70-200 2.8 lens but an still using the 17 -85 4-5.6. As I recently aquired the 70 -200 I am getting amazing results and am keen to change my other main lens to 2.8.

I mainly do photojournalsim with the occasional wedding or portrait shoot and can't decide between the 17-55 or 24-70?

I'm using a 40d with 350d as a backup

17-55 since you shoot a crop. IS will also help with low light.

Personally if I was only allowed one or the other and given you're using crop cameras, I'd opt for the 17-55 but you need to ask yourself what would be the most important to you: a) losing the 55-70 if you opt for the 17-55 or b) missing out on the 17-24 and IS if you opt for the 24-70. Also worth considering as you're into photojournalism, is the weight of these lenses (the 24-70 being much heavier).

I have a 40D and a 5D. I chose the 17-55 on a 40D over the 24-70 on a 5D (similar focal range). IS is just too good on that razor sharp lens! Because I have that zoom focal range, I picked up a 35L for my 5D.

I have the 17-55 and love it but no experience with the 24-70. Since you have the 70-200 you would only be missing between 55 and 70. I guess if you are soon going full frame then it would make the decision tougher.

I think that the 17-55 will suit you better as it has 2.8 and IS but if you are thinking about moving to full frame in the future this lens won't be compatible. For now though it is the way to go.

Come say hi in the UK SE thread - we have a couple of essex peeps already in there.

Aahh triple posting from Mr Green :P !!!

I would say go for the 24-70 as from what I have seen the IQ is amazing and it leaves the posibility to go FF open for the future. However I have had no real hands on experience with either ... but my next lens will definately be the 24-70 !! can't wait :)

I have used 17-55 when I had 40D... but when I moved 1.3x.. I bought 24-70L... even though I used to like 17-55 very much... I don't want to trade my 24-70L with 17-55...
