Hi everybody Does anybody have both the Canon 70-200mm is and 24-105mm is lenses I now have the 70-200 and love how sharp it is I try to use it for everything but I find it to long at times my question is how close is the 24-105 to it in IQ I would like to sell both my Tammy 28-75 and 18-270 and get the 24-105 if I knew it would make a significant difference. I'm looking for something to compare my 70-200 to. Thanks in advance.
Alan

I have a 24-105 and it's a great lens!
Sharp pictures and ideally walk around.
Do some search on the forum or check some reviews on the-digital-picture or fredandmiranda, they'll say I'm right ;-)a

Go for a 24-105L USM. You are going to love it!

I have the 24-105mm L and its by far one of the nicest lens ive ever used. I persinally love the 4-stop IS and find that it really helps me and some of the darker shots, one shot was taken at half a second handheld and came out perfectly sharp.

The 70-200 F4 IS is sharper, but the 24-105 is a great replacement for those lenses you posted.

The 24-105mm F4L is a great lens. It's far sharper than my older 70-200mm f/4L (non-IS). Shoot in RAW with it and you can pump the sharpness up by 5 or 7 in DPP (which is a lot, actually; my other lenses have their sweet spot around 3-5) without any sharpening artifacts.

My 70-200 2.8 IS is also my sharpest lens, I use it whenever I can. I upgraded from a 40D to a 5D body just so the 70mm would be wider so I can use it more often.

My 24-105 is a great lens, but its not near as sharp as my 70-200. I've been wanting to try the 24-70 2.8 to see how it compares to the 70-200.

I have and love both. The 70-200 is sharper but it's Canon's sharpest zoom. You will love the 24-105. The ranges of those two lenses compliment each other nicely.

Hi:

I have both the 24-105 f/4L IS USM and the 70-200 f/4L IS USM. Both are fantastic lenses. I think the 70-200 may have a little better IQ, but both are stunning. The images are sharp, the colors great and they compliment each other.

Go for the 24-105 you won't be sorry.

Well the 24-105 is not a very glamourous lens. It's not the sharpest lens out there, or even the sharpest zoom, but it's not bad and is certainly perfectly usable wide open. The bokeh is pretty poor. But the range (on a 35mm sensor) and IS make this lens incredibly useful, and that's why it's the only zoom in my bag. It's not as good optically as any of the 70-200 lenses though, especially in the bokeh department.

Since you have the 18-270, I am assuming this is on a APS-C camera. if that is the case, I think the 24-105 loses some appeal. 24mm is not wide enough for most with the crop factor. For similar price to the 24-105, you could get the 17-55 f2.8 IS. You'd only have a tiny gap in FL from 55-70 and you would have very comparable quality to the 70-200.

I have both. The 24-105 is excellent, especially stopped down a little. The 70-200 f4 IS is sharper. Not sure about the f2.8 version.

/broken record
the 24-105 is great. the 70-200/4 IS is definitely sharper and less prone to distortion.

they make a good pair, IMO

Another vote for 24-105L. Don't even think twice. If I had only one lens, that would be it.

I am waiting for my 70-200 f/4L IS; should be here in a few days. I know I am going to love it, and the combo.

I find the 24-105mm to be plenty sharp enough.
To be fair I can't compare it to the 70-200, but I've no reason to argue with previous posters who say the the 70-200 is actually sharper. But the fact remains that the 24-105 is an excellent and very useful lens.

I've only got two zooms, and personally prefer prime lenses, but I'm certainly not planning on getting rid of my 24-105 anytime soon.
