I was at the zoo (canberra Australia) and these guys were buzzing around in the trees, (wild) so I thought I'd have a go at trying to photograph them.

They are feisty little buggers! I assume they are a couple of the same?

I am fairly happy with the shots as such, I would have liked the male to be a bit sharper, and not have half his head in the shade, but they just didn't stop bouncing from branch to branch!

Sorry, I can't help tie down what kind of finch they are.

But here's a tip for you. At zoos, you'll normally find identification charts with photos of the birds, what their names are, habitat, etc. When I remember to, I normally take shots of the charts so that I can go back and identify the birds/animals in my photos.

Finches are always a challenge as they just don't seem to stop moving.

Your first bird is a Double-barred Finch (Taeniopygia bichenovii) the second is a Red-browed Finch (Neochmia temporalis)...cute aren't they? :)

I would have taken a shot of the label Pete, but they weren't zoo residents, hence no label. They were visitors.... or at least uncaged residents :)

Thanks darksome. ah, so they are different.
Yes, they are good looking birds. That's what attracted me to trying to shoot them. I was waiting for some monkey to come out and do something worth shooting, and I saw these things flying around. So I forgot about the monkey!

Cute little guys. For wild birds, if they showed up here, they would be a sensation and probably make the national news. :)

I'll have to get out and take some more then! We don't have those guys where I live, not that I have seen anyway. the zoo was down south a few hours, but we have all the usual parrots, lorrikeets, ocean birds etc. Looks like I might have another use for the 100-400. I haven't really taken photos of birds before.

Yes, I noticed even the pelicans around the forums are brown! I never knew they came in that colour
