My friend has a 40D - 17/55IS - 70/300 DO which he uses for family functions with a 430EX and vacations and an 85-1.8 for indoor gym sports and a 200L 2.8 for Soccer and baseball.

Most of the time he/they leave the camera at home because he/they do not want to carry the camera bag and change lenses while walking.

I plan on recommending he sell the 17/55 IS and the 70/300 DO and purchase the Canon 18-200 IS as a vacation walkaround.

Any other suggestions???

i wouldn't sell off those lenses just because they're not used when on vacation...also selling 2 lenses worth roughly 1700 to buy a 600 lens, that's most likely noticeably worse seems strange to me...if you wnat to recommend a superzoom, i'd look at the tamron 18-270mm...it's supposed to be the best of the new superzooms

Don't sell two nice lenses to purchase a superzoom. If anything, just have him buy a non-Canon superzoom but keep all his other lenses. He will deff miss the quality of the 17-55 and 70-300.

+1. I bought a G9 precisely for the reason of wanting a more compact camera for trips where I don't want to bring the dSLR.

When I'm on vacation I don't need a long telephoto very much. Perhaps 5% to 10% of what I shoot on vacation is longer than 100mm (FF equivalent).

So the best advice to your friend would be to mount the 17-55 and take nothing else.

If that is to large, try adding an 18-55 IS just for vacations.

If that is too large then get a Panasonic LX3.

I use a Canon 5DIII and a Sony A7rIII

LX3 or G10 is the way to go....it sounds like the G10 would be perfect for him if he wants a varied focal length

I use a G9.

I'm going to let him read the thread and make his own decision, and hopefully he will spend some time learning from the members of POTN.

Thanks
