I first thought this was a female Hairy Woodpecker, but it was only about 7" tall. I think the size and the size of it's beak is more like a Downy. Any Ideas? CC welcome

As you can see, not identical. -Harv-

Not a great shot because of the light, but you can see the heart shaped marking again. It would be interesting to know if they are all semetricaly marked from side to side like this. Graet shots by the way Harvey. Clay

Downy's are like 4 inches long, I know, I've had them in my hand many times. Look at the beak, it's half as long as her head, a sure giveaway. Compare her to Harveys Downy. Mitch- ____...^.^...____

Here is a not so good shot of a male that was about 30 yards away at the exact same time I took the shot of the female. I assumed they were a pair and of the same species. My first thought was also that they were Hairy's because of size. He was about the size of an American Robin, not quite as large as a Northern Flicker. By the way, some sources say 5-7" on the Downy. See how much longer the beak is in relation to the size of the head, compared to a Downy? That's the for sure giveaway if you can't see them live.

Thanks a lot for the ID help. Now if that male will just come back and give me a better shot at him I'll be tickled! Clay
