My 580EXII has a feature which only seems to work on automatic modes, and I'm wondering why, and if it can be done in manual modes (M, Tv, Av).

In auto, when focusing with an external flash, infrared lights are emitted to give the camera a focus point, and when trying the same thing in any other manual mode with all AF-Assist features on or off, it doesn't show.

Is there an explanation for this? Or am I doing something wrong?

could it be that your AF drive is set to servo / ai focus?? As far as i know, it needs to be on "one shot".
