well like the tittle states, i am a complete newb to photography other than messing around with my girl's rebel XT i know zero about photography......although i have been reading alot for the past 2 days:p

but tommorrow i will be buying a 50D with a kit lense, but will have no more $$$ for other lenses after the purchase. is that a bad move? i just figured i would buy a good body so it cuts out an upgrade down the line as well as being able to share lenses my girl(she only has a kit and some other one)

She has little experience as far as paid photography goes(large portfolio), but does have a good eye and very well rounded photoshop skills (CS3 suite). she already has a wedding booked and will have a couple of night life events under her belt.

any advice would be welcomed, oh and im mostly inerested in urban & motorsports photography so maybe in a couple of months a wide angle lense is in my future?

If you have the money for a 50D I don't think it's a bad choice at all. If I'm not mistaken the kit lens that comes with the 50D is the 28-135mm USM. Which is a great lens. I think it's also paired up with the 18-200mm, which from what I hear is also a great lens.

They are more than enough to learn from, even if that temptation to buy more lenses is there. :)

The 50D is an excellent camera, enjoy using it, I do.

as I'm sure will be echoed by many others on this forum, I'd go for something like a 18-55mm IS and a 55-250mm IS

that will run teensy bit more than the 28-135mm but will be more versatile (wider and longer)

you could also add a 50mm f/1.8 and also be able to do lowlight...

(the lenses don't all have to be bought at once...)

Welcome!

That's a good choice - but maybe consider a used 40d with a couple of lenses - that way you'll enjoy it more as a hobby (maybe buy the 40d, 28-135 and a tele like the 70-200 f/4L if you can stretch to that?)

How much are you picking it up for? Check your local classifieds and see if there are used deals that'll ease the pain a bit...

A word of warning - make sure the equipment is in good working order. I had a bad experience with a used Tamron 14mm a while back.

Actually - the previous suggestion is also great (18-55 + 55-250 + 50 1.8)... but maybe a used body would make up the price difference?

thanks for all the advice fellas, used will not be an option since i will be putting it on plastic. reason being im trying to increase my credit score and also 18 months no interest :) even though i own my condo and a car all 3 credit unions say i dont have enough history?
i will be purchasing it at $14xx with the 28-135mm, B&H has ir for $1334 so i figured the price diff would be less than 100 with S&H
once again thanks for the advice

Umm. You can buy used with plastic, you know.

Adorama has used 40D bodies for less than 700 bucks. With that extra 700 bucks you could spring for a bit of decent glass. Unless you just have to have the newest and best model, there doesn't seem to be be any better option to me.

here's a possibility:

either the original kit: Canon 50d + 28-135 (external link) ~= $1300

or: Canon 40d (external link) + 18-55 (external link) + 55-250 (external link) + 50 1.8 (external link) ~= $1400 (remove the 50 1.8 to get 1300)

by the way, both would be gotten new from amazon...

Edit: you also mentioned that you might go for a wide lens in a bit:
add a sigma 10-20mm (or canon's own 10-22) with the second and you've got 10-250mm covered!!

I just bought my 50D yesterday. It was kit box, and came with 28-135mm. it's a great lens, can't really complain about it. And surely it is good walk-around lens.

As of college student, it is difficult to buy great lenses. (at least right now) but photography is not about lens, or camera... they are just a tool to use it.

After all, it's the photographer ;)

At your position, I would start with buying a XSi (450D) body and the 28-135mm lens. Total cost will be less than $1000, if you have some more money, can spend on a 50mm f1.8, a grip and a speedlite. Still may not reach the whole cost of the 50D and kit lens.
A good camera doesn't automatically make all of your pictures turn out good. You decide 70% of their quality.

a friend of mine just got herself an XSi,

it's a great camera but I can't get my hands around it, it's too small!
my 40d (although it's broken and needs to go to canon to be fixed) is the perfect size and weight...
especially attached to my canon 70-200 2.8 IS and Sigma 150-500 OS (bigmos).

so, if you have small hands the rebel may be for you, if you have large hands (like me) the XXd line might be better...
