My wife calls my camera "she" or "her". As in, "Oh, what is SHE doing here???" Or, "Oh, I see you brought HER along..." Man I love her though...pretty fond of my wife as well.

Funny - thats how i feel as wellbw!

Im happy to call mine toys - this is a hobby, i havent made any money of them so they stay as being toys.
Now when i start making money and taking over the world (insert evil laugh here), they will become tools.

Hm, I'm good with toy. Never had an issue with the word before.

My camera gear is definitely in the toy category - I have a number of other expensive items I have because I want them, rather than need them, and they fall into the same category.

As you get older your toys get more expensive, that's all. Nothing derogatory about it.

Canon 6D
Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 , Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 macro
CanonEF 17-40 f/4 L Canon EF 24-70 f/4 IS L and 70-200 f/4 L :D

So maybe we should call it an adult toy then everyone could feel better about it and not feel like it is a put down. Everyone likes adult toys.

Until they start paying for themselves and become tools, they're toys... ;)

They're objects that us grownups can acquire and enjoy and amuse ourselves with, much like a child would with more conventional toys. Even if they are used pursing one's livelihood, they can still have a gadgety, toy-like aspect to them that brings enjoyment separate from the work tool aspect.

I think of a treat as an edible thing or an action. It was a treat that my wife made my favorite cookies, or had my car washed for me so that I didn't have to do it.

so that I didn't have to do it.

Or buy a new camera so you did not have to hire some to do it? :) Seems like a treat to me ... :)

Not until they start selling them in "adult" stores (like that book and novelty shop you always check to be sure no-one you know is in sight before entering).

Hmmm. Brings new meaning to the phrase "I love my camera"!

Yes, part of it was our forthcoming second child, and doing his pictures myself. :D

My cameras are my toys. I've earned exactly $0 from their use. Anything you play with and don't get paid for is a toy.

I think the OP is just a wee bit too sensitive. :D
