If it's a hobby then 'toy' is a fair term. If you use it to make a living, then it's your 'gear'

Maybe, I will mention here that no one ever called my new gear toys ~

it's just that in a thread announcing a new 1DsMKIII and many replies say how lucky the poster is and more say how jealous they are of him or her and then there is those one liners "Enjoy your new toy"

Just seems to spoil the party ~ but as you say and as this thread is demonstrating, it's probably just me. :)

Treat is just the same as Toy, besides, a trend like this can't simply be changed just because somebody decides everybody should, even if it is put into authority. Things must be enforced for a while for any effect to happen long-term.

Treats are things you buy once in a while which have a short space of time for enjoyment, so "toy" is quite fitting, a toy is something you play with for your own interest/amusement. And quite frankly, I'm in progress of buying my best toy :) It ain't no camera, it's a lens :P
