Polarisers blocks 2 stops of light, your camera is already capable of 15sec shutter speed so a polariser is a no no.

Haze or UV filter wont do anything for you at night, but as protection over the lens id leave it on.

Here is a sample setting id start with and fine tune accordingly.

set camera to TV mode.

set up on tripod

set to ISO 50

set shutter speed to 4 - 10 secs.

if aperture comes up in red with shutter is half pressed then increase shutter speed repeat until you have a workable aperture setting.

set delay to 2 secs so that you dont bump the camera by hand pressing the shutter speed.

Voila!.
adjust and experiment with the shutter speed. Your lighting situation will always be different according to where you are.

When you get a little more confident, you ll be able to play with manual where you can adjust the depth of field as well.

set delay to 2 secs so that you dont bump the camera by hand pressing the shutter speed.

I'm confused about this delay thing. Why would you want the 2 second delay for setting the shutter speed? Not sure how bumping the camera setting the shutter speed would affect anything.

I am sure he meant the shutter, not the shutter speed. :)

Sorry, my bad. With a tripod it still shouldn't be a problem. Or even use the remote controller.

If you set up the camera the way i mentioned ie TV and shutter speed set to the no of seconds depending on path of light trail, then set your shutter delay (sorry) to 2sec (or use remote as mentioned by Bosman), so you dont bump the camera for clear shot youll get good results.

Make sure its not windy, because wind can cause your camera to move during shot,

so example say it takes a car or whatever 15 sec to get from starting view to just past you, you would set your shutter speed to 15 seconds or enough to get some serious light blurring

hope this helps.

yup. you control how long the shutter is open by adjusting the 1/2000 fig in Tv mode, as a result the camera picks the aperture value (to the left) F2 or F3 etc to ensure photo is exposed correctly.

in AV mode you adjust the aperture size by varying the F value, this controls the depth of view, as a result the camera picks the shutter value to ensure photo is exposed correctly.

both options inherently control the amount of light that reaches the sensor..

so if you increase shutter speed in Tv mode, AV you will find will decrease (larger aperture) to allow the same light amount to hit your sensor.

if you increase aperture opening n AV mode, (smaller aperture value), you will find the shutter speed will decrease to allowthe same light amount to hit your sensor

same light refers to same exposure level.

auto and P modes automatically chooses both of these settings to set correct exposure

portrait mode, also automatically chooses both of these, but prioritizes larger apertures (smaller valus) to reduce depth of field.

i suggest you read some basic photography books.

Maybe you have to put into considerations that you are using different cameras.

While it is obviously possible on the G6 to set the duration of the self-timer to 2 seconds, I am afraid that is not possible on the G2. All that technological progress has to mean something, after all.

The solution, quite clearly, would be to use the remote control. It will fire immediately after you press the button on the remote.

Best regards,
Andy
