Don't know if this is planned obsolescence or just a way for Canon to make more money.
I have a RS-60E3 Remote Switch I use for my Rebel XT, when I went to use it on my new 40D the other day I found that the connections are not the same.
Does anyone know if there is an adapter that will all me to use this switch on the 40D or will I have to shell out another $80 to get the RS80N3?

I saw this item (external link) on Amazon but for that price you might find a new remote switch for the 40D on DealExtreme or Ebay.

Thanks for the lead Tims.
You're right I have seen other remotes that are less expensive than the original Canon, but I hate to have a remote for each camera.
Well I'll keep on looking and see if anything comes up.

To the best of my knowledge, the "N3" plug and socket used for the remote switch is a proprietary design.

I have purchased aftermarket remote switch assemblies (so I could , and the plug on them is a really horrible copy of the Canon plug although with a little custom trimming they do work. The switches themselves are nowhere near the quality of the Canon switch.

My suggestion is to just get a Canon remote switch. It does not take much room to store it in your bag.

Thanks for the advice Skip, I guess that is what I will do.

I had seen some aftermarket switches and wondered what the quality was like, especially at the price there were selling at. I gues you get what you pay for and with the possibility of damaging the camera I guess the Canon switch is the best bet.

Get this one from deal extreme:
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.8231 (external link)

There is no reason to pay for the Canon one with the YN one around. It is cheap enough that everyone should own one as well.

I dont know which one SkipD got, but the YN one has a plug that matches the Canon one perfectly and fits nicely into the camera. The button feels pretty much just as nice as the Canon as well (maybe SLIGHTLY less tactile, I find it easy to find the half press and full press though) and functions perfectly. Only real difference is that the connector is plastic instead of metal coated on the back area, which really makes no functional difference at all (its not even the part that goes into the camera...the Canon one is plastic there as well).

Some of the other aftermarket ones are crap, the YN one is quite nice and you cant beat it for $4.80 shipped! If anything try it and see if you like it! You will not damage your camera with any of the switches as all they do is short pins on the camera. Only thing you could possibly do I guess is bend the pins on the camera if you tried to jam the connector in but you could do that with the Canon one as well.

Some of the Canon accessories are just stupidly priced, their remote switches are one of these items. It is about a 3 cent switch inside a plastic case with some wires, nothing more, nothing less. The canon might have a slightly better feel, but is it $45 more? I definitely think not.

Sometimes you can't see the forest for the trees. I never thought to look there, had been shopping at local photo stores.
Will definitely support POTN and purchase one.
Thanks for all the help, this is a great place.
