You never know he might see you as competition and trying to put you off. Are you able to look on Facebook and see if he is any good?

On you roller derby pics I thought you were a little to square onto the straight but the action was at the bend, you were shooting in vertical format at their eye level, this leaves large space top & bottom, so try a lower view point, and fill the frame. If you have a fast autofocus then keep taking after the initial pic at head height for face expressions.
This may be the best sport for a bum man but pick the best don't bother with the rest

I see what he is saying but im just thinking I cant see why I want to change what I am doing from what he has mentioned. I thought he was going to say, try holding the shutter button slightly later or setup some sort of lighting. Was it wrong to shoot these in portrait as opposed to landscape? I want full body shots rather than head and shoulders. :(

*confused*

Would like to see what he came out with as I have seen a lot of images from you guys from there and its not ideal shooting conditions. Just be honest mate, send him links to your car stuff and say that your speciality, who knows people talk to each other, plus he may give you pointers / help / get access in future.

A lot of photography is very subjective, if you and the girls are happy with it why change. He has not offered anything that is particularly constructive.

I just replied back nicely that I shall take it all on and think about it in the future and now just need to prepare when I get a chance to shoot at the Emirates hopefully in the next week or so. Hilton group have asked me to come down again. Hopefully flying out with them to Ajax also. :)

Thats just it, I dont want the same shots as everyone else. Im not looking to magazine publications. If i get one, thats ace but I mean just to get my foot in the door, thats all that matters for me. :)

No he is saying shoot portrait but get lower. I shoot all my running/bike events from a low angle as same height doesn't look as good.

Sounds like he is saying after taking the shot keep it half pressed, although I expect for some of the "hits" your better to take 2-3 quick fire.

I suppose it was hard to move position once you were there? I know everyone has their own view on life. I can see both sides of the coin on this one.

I certainly agree on the last one, but I suppose thats down to personal choice aswell and what your aiming for. If your aiming to cover every girl in the same position then great other than that, if you get 1 great pick of that angle then move onto another. I suppose its like sitting inside Druids at Brands all day and shooting panning.

I don't think it was wrong to do them in portrait mate. But I do see what he's saying, it looks like most shots were done with center point focusing (I could be wrong of course).

Just looking at the comments for one of the albums and saw this shot (external link) which really shows the issue. Had you chosen a different focus point or done a focus/recompose (which is tricky with the wide open f stops I'm sure you were using) you could have gotten their feet into the shot and cut out the dead space at the top.

Thats just it, they threw all of us in the same box and not allowed to move to another spot which sucked. I see what he is saying which I will try. :)

I cant check the shots at work  Only via phone :( Ill have to try a few different things out. Maybe try shooting with the 85mm next time round and see if I can get more of the bend.

It's the one Bette Noir commented on, with her getting ready at the start line.

85 might be a bit long even...I assume you had your 135 on most of the night? I was swapping pretty regularly between my 24-70 and 70-200, but I don't know what focal lengths I was shooting at without looking at lightroom.

I don't think the corner they made everyone stick too was the greatest spot in the room to be honest.

Yup, I used the 135L for both bouts. I have a feeling at Earls Court, they may have a bigger space between the track and the toggers or spectators area. If I get a spot, Ill look into this.

It would have been much better if they stuck us on the other corner. To the right of where you sat. Or near the door but I suppose that was a limitation of the hall.
