Trying to actually USE the techniques I've been reading about, and some of the gear I've been collecting & constructing. Looking forward to your C&C on this portrait of my daughter.

This is a nice solid shot. If I had to come up with something to critique I would tell you to watch the hair on her face as it is a little distracting. And the focal length you shot at is a tad too wide and gives some distortion to her hand which appears larger than it likely is. I do like this shot though and look forward to seeing more

This is really solid! The only think that bugs me is that it looks like her ring is rotating off her finger.

Thank you Stan for your encouragement and suggestions!

Since this is a crop camera at 1.6x, I am thinking that 39mm is really 63mm, but as you said this is still a bit wider than is really optimal for portraits. We set up this shot in close quarters - keeping her a few feet in front of the BG meant I was shooting with my back to the wall. Next time I will make sure I have room to stand further away to improve the perspective and still be able to shoot at 80mm and up. We'll also take more time with hair and makeup - this was a spur-of-the-moment shoot without much planning or prep. Plus, she's not only the subject, she's also the MUA!
