I put up my 55-200 on ebay after it didn't sell here, and it sold last night. There's a catch - even though the lens can be bought for £80 anyday off ebay, IT WENT FOR £197!

The sale seems fine - they've paid via paypal, etc.

My question is - could they scam me? I don't want to end up sending the lens and find that their paypal account shuts down or manages to get their money back.

The auction is here: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk …ESOX:IT&item=200328122555 (external link)

Help!

His feedback seems ok, if he does scam, you're protected by paypal aren't you? They could take money from his account if he did.

I would drop a message or two to the buyer-- get some communication going and see how they react.

Try to withdraw your money from PayPal first and then send the lens to the buyer...

I can't believe someone would pay that much money for that lens!! I'll see if I can get through to them.

Paypal can always take the money back-- even if there is none in your paypal account----- lots of fine print.

I think it is a "mistaken purchase" - I think the buyer/bidders were under the impression this is a 55-250mm IS lens and bid upto that level. Especially since the winner seems to be a ebay newbie (only 4 feedback). No fault of your own and you are clearly within your rights to send the item and collect the money but to avoid any potential negative feedback / returns once the buyer realises his mistake, I would suggest that you send him an email to confirm that he has bought this particular item - perhaps include it as part of an email to get confirmation of his address.

Yep - as long as there is money in any of the accounts linked to paypal, they will take the money back if there is a dispute raised by the buyer and he requests for a refund.

He's right though, it's happened to me once before, I sold something to someone in China, at the time I had no idea that some buyers from there are complete scammers, I sent off the item and a few days later paypal send me an email saying the e-cheque or something hasn't come through because of insufficient funds in the buyers account, after that the buyer had disappeared and his ebay account was suspended. He had no bank account linked to his paypal anymore, so I lost my money and item.

is it a confirmed Paypal acount, that should give you a a slightly warmer feeling. And ensure the money has been transferred (And not an E-cheque as Salma has unfortunately experienced before)

It could just be mistaken identity on the lens, or the old 'ebay bidding rush' and the buyer is probably feeling very foolish now. It's his responsibility to tell you he has made a mistake.

Sending an email to confirm delivery address will reassure you that the person is real, and again give him/her another opportunity to correct their mistake.

Paypal will protect both of you, but it's not the easiest of processes.

That's exactly the experience I had before - just with sending something to the US.

The address is unconfirmed on the paypal account, but it's in the UK... AARGH!
