Hi guys, need some help here

My 85L finally arrived yesterday, and what's a guy to do but take tons of sample photos!
I came across a problem when I shot wide open and it didn't disappear until 2.8

Please look at the image below *will post a 100% when I get home*
Look closely at the words: With Lens Cap LP1219 and ... ect

IMAGE: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3345/3442947991_80a1e4c883_o.jpg
IMAGE: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3306/3446398134_55b161b589_o.jpg

Front blur is purple, center is dead on just fine, and back blur starts turning green!
Do any of your lenses do this too? I'm partly guessing it's because of the black text and white background, but if you have other ideas please don't hesitate to post.

I tried fixing it in lightroom, but wasn't able to. If you have a lightroom preset or PS plugin, please let me know!
Thanks!

Yes, this happens with 1.2 and backlight.

its called Longitudal Chromatic Aberration

Happens with most wide aperture primes under certain light conditions

And its down to physics...that is a particularly glaring example right there though

If I got another lens "could" it be better, or will they all react the same way?

The f1.8 does exactly the same thing

I'm not 100% sure, You seem to have an extreme example there, but someone more familiar with the 85L could probubly answer if thats completely out of the "norm" for that particular lens or not...I personally think its just the lighting, Extreme backlighting and lines like that are going to cause it im afraid..

I get the same thing with my 1.8 if I shoot a barcode. Needless to say I don't shoot any more barcodes :-)

A friend just got this lens too and shot on a 5DMKII. He was shooting along side with me for a bridal shoot and the purple fringe was pretty visible along the white gown with bright backlight. The 70-200 I used control it much better.

If you don't like it, send it back or send to Canon and ask them to fix, but I think a $1800 lens shouldn't have that much "fringe". I've seen 85L with less purple so it can be fixed or copy varies.

I am not sure if Canon can fix it. I got all 3 prime and they all does it when I shot wide open!

Ahh...When I shot with the MKI, I deliberately looked for this and it was there but not as profound as the OP so maybe different copies varies. But I'm sure Canon can do some adjustment. At least you get the warranty extended

Yep...part of owning the 85 1.2. Depending on the circumstances, it will show up to varying degrees at large apertures. If shoting high contrast/backlit scenes, stop down a bit.

Here's the 100% crop:

**I shot my roomate in softer light and it went away. You could still see some purple and green, but stoping down made it go away. Where as in high contrast situations 2.8 would be the magic number instead. Sharp too!

Canon cannot "fix it", as it is part of the physical properties of this lens. The only way to avoid the LCA effects is to learn to hide it, easiest way being to stop down when shooting high contrast. It is part of "learning the 85/1.2" if you wish :)

There are lenses which have greater control over LCA (called APOchromatic lenses), usually Canon does this with fluorite elements: 70-200/4, 100-400 IS, 200/2 lenses are very good at suppressing LCA.
