Okay. Here goes.

When I was born I had a cousin who was retarded. Yes, retarded. That's what we said back then, and what everyone called that condition.

My Aunt had that cousin, and because she couldn't find proper care or education for her daughter she was instrumental in forming the Association for Retarded Citizens. The ARC is a large organization, and they haven't changed their name to reflect modern "don't use the R word" mentality, because they understand that the R word isn't meant by them in that way. It was the original description of a diagnosis, and not by any means an insult.

just cos you dont find it offensive doesnt mean that others dont.

it doesnt offend me personally either but i also think this thread should have been named with a bit more consideration for others in mind.

this isnt about "walking on eggshells".....its about common sense and thinking about others and their situations, for some that would be a serious change of pace.

its an expression? so what. there are hundreds of offensive expressions that shouldn't be used, you need to get real.
