Ken, hope your knee soon recovers.
Andy, ha ha, I actually got some knee and elbow pads of the sort used by skateboarders, but the straps are a bit tight - might need to adjust those - but it was comfy on my knees and elbows!

Here are some of the shots I took - I'll put a few more in the macro section.

1. A Knot Grass moth caterpillar

IMAGE: http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i192/garlicpickle/Canon/lr1small-6881.jpg

2. Some of the hairs on its back
IMAGE: http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i192/garlicpickle/Canon/lr1small-6902.jpg

3. A nursery web spider
IMAGE: http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i192/garlicpickle/Canon/lr1small-6930.jpg

4. A fruit fly, trying to dislodge an unwelcome hitchhiker
IMAGE: http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i192/garlicpickle/Canon/lr1small-6967.jpg

5. Some of the smallest inhabitants of my garden that I've photographed - two springtails (still trying to find out if they are colour variations or different species) and a tiny red mite, all on the corner of the vertical post of my compost bin. These creatures are just moving dots to the naked eye.
IMAGE: http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i192/garlicpickle/Canon/lr1small-7060.jpg

All of these shots were handheld, mostly with the MP-E65, using a 430EXII flash on a bracket and using a home-made diffuser. The next day I went back to the compost bin post corner with the heavy gear - the MP-E65 on a focus rail and two flash guns with diffusers - and concentrated on the tinies. I'll post some of those next time. It's funny to think how much time I've spent watching tiny life in and around my compost bin!

I only just noticed in my haste to post these that I didn't get rid of the dust spots. Those in the last one show how critically small the effective aperture is when you're up at 5X with the MPE-65. This was at an indicated f/11 (effectively f/66), but the next day I got sharper shots by going to f/7.1 or f/6.3 or so.

Mark.

My, you lead an interesting life Mark

That MPE65 is an amazing bit of kit, do you have to control your breathing when shooting or is it a tripod only job.

The knee is a bit better today, I hope it's back to normal soon as I want to go to London to visit the Royal Soc of Marine Artist's Exhibition.

Some car shots at Boarhunt, wonder if I should have used a lower angle, there goes the knees again :) Incidentally I'm selling my Satnav as the new wheels has it built in if anyone is interested.

Great work Mark - like the nursery web spider (hairy thing isn't it) & the caterpillar is very colourful.
Nice set of wheels Ken - You must either spend hours cleaning it, or not take it out much as it still looks spanking new.

Made a point of stopping off at Langstone mill on the way home -12 egrets & 2 herons all roosting in the tree where I thought they were from the other day.
Just as you walk past the weir / tide mill outfall, they're all roosting about 20 yards in, if that.
Didn't go much further round to see how many more were in the big trees across the pond as I just wanted to get home for my siesta (which never happened - thanks unwanted caller!!).
Lot's of juveniles as well as adults, the youngsters still have plenty of fluffy feathering at the moment which look great when the wind catches them & also plenty flying about.
Obviously they don't do too much foraging when the tide is right in.
Not seen weather for the weekend but if good I will be going to have another stab at getting some shots (and under expose them!).

Had a session down at the creek on Saturday, sat waiting for the tide to drive the birds closer, but seem to have got the timing wrong so spent most of the time with both the 2X and 1.4 piggybacked, so manual focusing was a challenge. Also shot mostly at 3200 so it was an experiment in seeing what could be done in extreme conditions. Heres some of the shots, most cropped a bit as well.

It was pleasant in the sun though, and an exercise to repeat when the tide is at the correct height.

This crow was digging around on the shore the other day. Awfully quiet round here, isn't anyone else taking any photos.

It's dark when I leave for work and going dark when I get back, so outdoor photography is limited to weekends now, and last weekend I wasn't too well, so I haven't taken a shot in 10 days. I've been spending a bit of time on Lightroom and Photoshop though, so I'm still enjoying the hobby.

Dark going to work and dark coming home, sounds like work is taking too much of your time, you know what they say, "Work the curse of the drinking classes" :)

Well I'm taking next week off, so hopefully I'll get some shooting done then. It should be a good time for autumn landscapes and fungi in the woods (if that doesn't sound a bit questionable!).

Likewise Mark - very dark indeed when I go to work also (and cold this morning to say the least!) & haven't had a great deal of spare time for 'togging as such.
I have made a point however, of going to the beach now that it's only 2 mins away, and making the most of the beautiful sunsets we've had of late.
A few recent efforts of mine (virtually all straight out of the box, apart from minor tweaking & getting rid of dust spots - where the hell did they come from as I've only just got it back!)

Very much so Ken, and so look forward to weekends, which just happen to come around far too quickly, but not quickly enough!

Shouldn't complain really - I feel for all those that don't have jobs & who would love to be in the position to say the same (been there meself).

I finally processed some Pagham shots from last month. Most things were a way off so probably not up to bird forum standards <embarised>

Chiffchaff (did actually post this in Bird Forum)

Good shots at range Lester, especially the chiffchaff. I didn't even know we had spoonbills in UK - are they wild?
