What do you use as a second body?

I currently have a 30D, 20D, 10-22 (will be swapping for a 17-40), 24-70, 70-200 f/2.8, and a 85 f/1.2. Soon I'm going to purchase a 5Dmk2, but I don't know what to do for a second body. I would like to a little more resolution (around 12mp at least), but I'm not quite sure what to go with. I'm trying to decide on a 5D, 40D, and a 50D. My only complaint about the 5D is the auto focus in low light. And I really like the 24-70 range on the crop. What is everyone else using and why?

5D MKII. ;)

Personally, after struggling through using a 5D + 40D combo last year, I will only use two bodies that are preferably identical, and if not then very close. A good match for the 5D MKII would be a 50D, since the top button layout is very similar, and the menu system and feature set is also very similar. If you can't swing a 50D, then a 40D is very close.

Since you currently have a 30D, the 5D is a kissing cousin to it (only better). I had a 30D (loved that camera) and now have a 5D. I will be getting another 30D as a second camera.

Yup, true. The 5D + 30D are laid out EXACTLY the same, so that would be an easy pair to use.

I have the 5d2 and the 50d plus an old XT as a third. I like multiple bodies to avoid switching lenses. But my two primary lenses are the 24-70L and the 70-200 f2.8 L and I'm growing unhappy with either the gap or overlap in focal length due to the crop factor. In all likelihood, I will retire the XT and get a second 5d2.

I can't see any point where I would ever need the 70-100mm range very much, so that never bothers me. What does bother me is that if I want 35mm and 85mm focal lengths at the same time, I just can't do that. Instead I always get either 35mm and 136mm, or 56mm and 85mm.

I use 40ds as our second bodies. usually keep the 70-200 on one of the 40ds.

I don't have a 5D2, but I use the 1Ds3 as a primary... so I'm in a similar boat.

The 40D is my secondary. Well, actually, it's more like the the 40D and 1Ds3 are both primary cameras... I use them both extensively through the day. Sometimes I use the 40D more, sometimes the 1Ds3 more.

There are advantages to full frame cameras BUT... there are also advantages to crop cameras too. Which is why I use both, and just can't see myself shooting FF only.

I probably didn't express myself correctly. The 5d2 gets the 70-200 most of the time, mostly because it's more likely to be used with natural light from greater distances. This means the 24-70 is on the 50D and there are times when I wish the crop factor didn't limit me at the wide end. I keep a Sigma 10-20 on my XT, and of course I can just switch the lenses when I really need to, but this lens combo would be sooo nice on a pair of 5d2's. Ahhh, someday.

Im gonna own a 5D II one day soon. Right now I seem to having trouble locating a 24-70L. If you all know of one for sale I'd love to get one.
