Charles, this article may shed more light on the number of poles in the water that carried an extreme load from the top as well as sideways when ships pulled up and water currents were doing what they are best at. :)

Thank you for trying, but I still have no idea what the purpose is for the poles.

They look like they are only 1 to 2 feet (30 to 60 CM) apart.

Charles, strength and resistance to various loads, shearing forces generated by the waves, undercurrents and ships pulling up etc. and the shear load of the platform aka dead loaf they had to bear. The bottom of the bay also has to do with the relatively close spacing of the poles. Think strength is in the numbers.

Yeah, that was a bit of performance art at the Rijksmuseum. He would constantly update the time in there. Was pretty cool to watch.
