The owners are strict Jews and always close for the Sabbath.

I've been a loyal B&H customer for the duration of my time in photography. I find it more and more irritating lately because it seems they're not taking orders almost every time I want to order something. I respect their religious beliefs but when Adorama and others offer the same products at the same prices with the same customer service, it's really a no-brainer to go elsewhere. I'd imagine this is costing B&H a lot of Business.

Message from Adorama Camera Customer Service Ambassador

I've been a loyal B&H customer for the duration of my time in photography. I find it more and more irritating lately because it seems they're not taking orders almost every time I want to order something. I respect their religious beliefs but when Adorama and others offer the same products at the same prices with the same customer service, it's really a no-brainer to go elsewhere. I'd imagine this is costing B&H a lot of Business.

At Adorama we also close for the Sabbath (Saturday) and major Jewish Holy Days - and we do appreciate that our closing times can be inconvenient to some of our potential customers.

Adorama's owner is an observant orthodox Jewish gentleman, whose beliefs prohibit him - his family and his business - from operating on the Sabbath and on many of the religious holidays (which all begin an hour prior to sunset the evening before the day of the holiday, which is why we close early on Fridays).

We can't employ non-Jews here during those days, because to do so would involve the company conducting business - which is forbidden in Jewish Law.

In this era of 24-hour commerce, I guess it's unusual to find that there really are still people who consider their spiritual duty to be more important than squeezing money out of our customers at every opportunity.I receive frequent emails from customers who state that in this day and age it is comforting to know there are people around who do not place money before all else.

Many businesses in the US and elsewhere in the world force employees to work on holidays when the time is better spent with their friends and families - or just relaxing by themselves.

We do appreciate the understanding of our customers that this is an important element of our owner's value system. Perhaps the following links to articles in the Washington Post & the New York Times will help to make some sense of our closure policies:

I hope this helps

Sincerely

Agreed. My business is always closed on Sunday's due to our beliefs... I realize it probably costs me a lot of business, but so be it!

Personally I think it is great. With a few exceptions the online stores are closed for not much more than a day. I can wait a day. Plus, many online retailers don't ship Saturday orders until Monday and some don't ship friday evening orders until Monday. So if I can order on Friday night and get it shipped on Monday or order on Sunday and get it shipped on Monday there really isn't a difference to me.

I do think B&H goes out of there way to let you know they aren't taking orders, but I don't feel like they are pushing a religious agenda on their site.

Plus sometimes we all need to take a couple of hours and rethink our orders. Usually after a day I remember that I will have to also pay rent this month, and while I would love that lens, I still also want a place to live.

I think it's commendable that these businesses sacrifice real income because of their beliefs. Some things are more important that making a buck. I applaud you all. The rest of us (including me!) should take a lesson from them.

A company that cares about their employees!?!?!?! Novel idea! Since many of the employees are also Jewish it makes sense to close. Most would likely request the time off anyway.

I wish my company were more like B&H. I think the employees get more time off in the month of April than we do all year!
