maybe this should be in the rumors section, but can anyone with industry ties share the official word on the apparent lens shortage? so many lenses are out of stock in so many places, there has to be an underlying reason, canon must be telling its retailers something. does anyone know what is being said in defense of withholding product at a time when other companies are building inventory and wishing for the potential sales canon seems to be passing up?

Because the economy sucks.

Photo stores do not want to stock lenses when they are not comfortable that they will sell fast enough. You want to turn inventory and not carry it and this is especially true nowadays more than ever.

I'm sure if it were up to Canon they would be cranking them out 24/7.

so I order a lens on back order, and photomegastore orders said lens from canon, is canon gonna pull one of the shelf and ship it, or are they putting it on the order list for next months production run? I am hoping they are sitting on a few months inventory, not looking at an empty warehouse and feeling smug. I want my denmad lenses.

From my previous experiences, if you're buying anything else other than computers from Dell, be prepared to wait for awhile because they never keep them in stock.

I wonder if Japanese exports falling off a cliff has anything to do with it

Something is going on. At quite a few online websites, popular and in demand Canon EF optics are out of stock with no estimated resupply date. Maybe the sluggish economy has something to do with it, little supply and just a little bit more demand.

yeah, fear of getting stuck with goods that won't sell and devalue everyday is a manufacturers nightmare, but if you can't supply a product, are you in business? I have no doubt I will get my lens, eventually. It will be interesting to see the manufacture date.

Yeah well some of these lenses have been out of stock for the most part since christmas! This is not good for business! Don't back order lenses and not keep them in stock because you're "Worried", just do special orders! Easy as that. Most people will think they want to spend $3000 on lenses they don't have, well to heck with you I'll buy them used and you'll lose even more sales.

To me it does not make sense to not keep lenses in stock. Obviously people are looking to buy. You see threads every day about people wanting to plunk down a grand on a lens. And this is a small forum! They can't use the excuse of not wanting to be stuck with a 35L! Give me a break, it's not like it's not going to sell. If they get 10 in they're gone in minutes. This lens will always been in demand. Event he older 24's were very hard to find when the new one came out, people still wanted both.

Something is going on with Canon for sure. As a dealer I have a bunch of stuff on order and a majority of it has been on order for almost a month. I have never had more than a few days turnaround. Cannot get any more information. Canon does their projections the first week of every month and they do not ship anything that week. Got an email from my rep saying they were behind a week with their projections, so I am hoping stuff will start shipping this week.
Something is for sure going on though. Its not just a few places, its everywhere.
