Ok so I am looking to get a camcorder. The prevalent standard seems to be AVCHD. I of course want to play the videos on a HDTV. So the best way until I get a bluray player is what?

If you have a AVCHD device, and a DVD burn program. Can you test out this method.

You can only use that method if you have a "BLU-RAY" burner. Most blu-ray players will play a standard DVD disk.
My camcorder plugs into my HD TV via a HDMI cable ..... no need to burner the movie, unless I want to edit it and keep it.

Blu-ray burner not required. Only a blu-ray player.

Did you read it. It ends with burning to DVD. I guess I could try it and take it to the store. Oh wait I don't have a AVCHD recorder. Could that be why I asked someone to try it?

the ps3 will also play avchd files directly from a hard drive, or even the sd card, maybe over the network as well?? i don't own one, but i've heard that it's pretty versatile.

blu-ray media is absurdly overpriced, you can burn avchd files to a standard definition dvd, and play 'em back on certain blu-ray players, including the ps3, i believe(??)

o.k., i just read your link, that's more or less what i'm talking about.

Maybe, but I'm trying to get someone to try this method for me.

It would mean that I could use DVD until blu-ray burner prices get more affordable.

there is no question that it works, the problem is finding the right software and compatible blu-ray player... the avchd forum at dvinfo.net should be very helpful with that.

I believe Nero can burn a DVD as if it was a BD.
As long as the disc has the correct folder structure it will play BUT you will need a BD player as well. Ive not tried the original link you posted but i have made mini BD disc's on DVd and these will also play back on my PS3.
I use a Popcornhour media streamer for my AVCHD files. Either straight off the card via a card reader or just streamed over my network from my PC. The PS3 will also work this way as has already been mentioned, either from the SD card, a USB drive, a BD or DVD and over a network. plus its a very good BD player in its own right.

Thanks, then it does work and can be a stop gap until blu-ray burners are plentiful.

It can play AVCHD files off of a USB stick? wow! I'll have to check if other players do this.

How about a HD home theatre network box? You plug it in, connect it to your LAN and stream video off the network in HD! Might be a bit cheaper...

Remember for the moment you can use your camera straight to the TV with HDMI and it'll be in HD!

By the way - AVCHD can be burned to DVD (or blu-ray at a much higher cost) and played on a blu-ray player. Needs the blu-ray player though.

Any of the NMT based players will do this.
