Missed this one, Netgear have released a third NV NAS device: The NVX you can find out a bit about it here:

First looks (external link)

Looks like a strong contender for your money especially with native Mac support... Pricey but you do get your monies worth.

Some call me the Heilan' Laddie, but others call me Rob.

The price for this stuff is getting ridiculous.

$1499 is a bit much. I had a ReadyNAS NV+ and loved it but wouldn't buy this one. I've recently switched to QNAP and bought a TS-509 Pro for $700 and added 5 500GB drives. For less than $1K I have a 1.8TB RAID 5 NAS with iSCSI support (wonderful!), webserver and much more.

Of course what I bought from QNAP could have been built using Open Source software and a hand-built system but I didn't want to hand build anything :)

With the roll your own NAS can you get?

iSCSI support
Native AFP support
Throughput speeds of up to around 80-90Mb
Time Machine support
5 Year warranty
X-RAID 2
Low Power usage it has a 200w PSU, the lowest I'd put into a OSS RAID box is 350w.
CDP - Continuous data backup

How many applies to you only yourself can answer, but this is a business orientated NAS. The NV+ will continue to sell alongside the NVX. Yes I've built a OSS NAS, but it was time consuming and not as easy as a off the shelf NAS box and if you're in photograpy or any other business time is money.

You are correct...that's why I don't roll my own NAS :)

The NVX looks to be a similar product to QNAP's Pro series (I have the 509) although the QNAP 509 Pro a bit more power (250 vs 200). The iSCSI on the NVX is new and very nice. If I hadn't already bought the QNAP, I'd be looking at the NVX.

For myself I'm seriously tempted by the NVX, mainly because of the bandwidth it offers. I do a lot of data traffic on my own LAN and there's only a few NAS systems that come close to saturating the bandwidth on a 1Gbe LAN. ReadyNAS Pro does this in droves, it seems the NVX has inherited this ability.

I just ordered myself a ReadyNas Pro Pioneer edition (Diskless) from amazon. There is a 200$ rebate (As a visa card) promotion going on currently from netgear so is a great time to get these. While http://images10.newegg.com …23MIRsApr1Jun3009jh28.pdf (external link) is not found on amazon, the terms of the rebate do include amazon, aegis and a bunch of others. Use the promotional code (09-79761) in the link above at the www.prosaferebates.com (external link) site (simulate a rebate submission) and verify for yourself.

I use my existing ReadyNas nv+ as my primary image store and the transfer speeds slow down LR significantly even when dealing with my 5D's 12mp vs 20D's 8mp. Once my 5D2 comes with 21mp, it will start crawling. The 100Mbps vs 20MBps transfer speed should make a big difference. I have a fully optimized gigabit lan connecting my machines with all the recommended readynas hardware so things should just work.

For me, the ReadyNas has been flawless for the last 3 years. The pro, being x86 based, also allows me to run some linux server apps on it. The tipping point in my etting it (My initial app is a perforce server for my somewhat large in ambition home projects)

My reason for getting into this was to get data redundancy, hassle free operation, streaming of music to my PS3, automated data backups of the entire NAS, UPS support and a file server. I get all of this with money and a much better job that I could do myself. The money spent is very well worth it IMO and I can spend my time on other things.

Sorry if this comes across like an unsolicited promotion, I just love the stuff and how it has come to be such a dependable part of my life.
