Well I finally pulled the trigger on the 5D2. Hopefully it should be here in a week or so. Anyways, in order for me to help pay for this, I am regrettably forced to give up some equipment. Although I own the 24-105L and am happy with it on a crop, I also own the 50mm 1.4. I plan to keep the 24-105L which was one of the deciding factors for getting the full frame. Before I sell the 50mm 1.4 I was wondering just how well the prime performs against the 24-105L on full frame? Lets take out the low light advantage the 50mm 1.4 has and just consider IQ at f4 and up between the two on a full frame sensor. On my 40D I think they are pretty much the same but I have not tried it on a full frame especially across a 21 megapixel sensor. I guess I'm hoping that the 24-105 won't be outresolved by the 5d2 sensor and wish later I had not sold the prime insted. I am also planning to sell off my 85mm 1.8 because I am going to keep the 70-200L and the 100mm macro. I know you are all saying keep the primes but in order to complete this purchase, somethings have to go. I do have a 580 EX speedlight BTW. Do any of you full framers who have both find the IQ that much better at f4 and up with the 50 over the 24-105L?

My 24-105 is quite sharp and I have very little to complain about on it.

My 50/1.4 is cracking sharp from f/2.8 and up, marginally sharper than the zoom.

IMO the 24-105 is the one I would keep between the two. The range of the zoom covering true wide angle to short tele is incredibly handy on a FF body. The marginal increase in sharpness from the prime is not a good reason to prefer it.

If you really had a strong demand for a fast lens then the prime would be worth keeping, but not for some tiny IQ advantage.
